Poor lad had an unfortunate incident and tore off the inside of his hoof capsule and damaged his bulb a couple of months back. After a recuperation period he has now hopefully started his journey back into full work. A Z-bar shoe was applied to the frog to limit weight bearing on the injured heel and to hopefully prevent overreaching and the loss of shoes. He trotted sound after in sand so would be hopeful he will remain sound for full work down the road.

Derek poupard casts applied with Jim blurton heart bars for this lad with medial/lateral imbalance, negative hoof pastern axis and a weak crushed medial wall that is over worked from the imbalance. This lad was completely out of work before shoeing in casts and is now back to light hacking. He will continue to progress back into full work over the next 3/4 shoeing’s.

Just a follow on from yesterday’s story, with the results being fairly split. The truth is there is no correct answer between 4-6 weeks. A thoroughbred racehorse would have a maximum cycle of 3-4 weeks. Most of my clients would be on a 5 week cycle and if you have a horse with good feet and a good environment where we can shoe with plenty of support they can go on a 6 week cycle. They should never stay on longer than 6 weeks because it’s not possible for us to fit a shoe with enough support for it to still fit them well after a 6 week cycle. Leaving them on too long can lead too a negative hoof pattern axis, medial-lateral imbalance, crushed heels, weak walls and lost shoes. Shoeing your horse on a regular cycle and on time can actually save you money in the long run, less trips to the vets, less joints medicated, less need for remedial shoeing.

Making shoes from scratch is vital in any farrier apprenticeship. The apprentice has to sit a final practical exam where they make, fit and nail on handmade shoes. This is an opportunity I was lucky enough to be afforded during my apprenticeship McDaid and it’s only fair to pass on to the next generation. getting the practice in today.
