One of Ireland's Most Beautiful Stone Carvings
This remarkable feature of the building dates back to the early 15th century and is known as the Waking Bier.
While it was once thought to be the place where monks were laid out before burial, historians now generally agree that it was used to display relics of the True Cross.
Carved from Tipperary limestone and built into the fabric of the structure itself, the Waking Bier showcases exceptional craftsmanship.
Along its lower panels, each section features a unique carved emblem, including a kneeling angel bearing the crest of Holycross.
The intricate stonework also includes charming details such as baby owls, animals, and floral motifs, making it one of the most beautiful and fascinating carvings within the building.
