THE HILL OF THE WITCH!

Despite its name, or maybe because of it, The Hill of the Witch at Loughcrew, County Meath, is a truly enchanting place, one of the many hidden gems of Ireland’s Ancient East.

There are 25 or more cairns scattered over Loughcrew's hills, it's the country's greatest concentration of Neolithic passage tombs. Legend tells us it's the work of an ancient giant witch who once ruled the area. Loughcrew's name in Irish is Sliabh na Callaí which means Hill of the Witch, or Hags Hill. Her name was Garavogue, known locally as An Cailleach Bhéara, and it's said she was responsible for the landscape; placing large boulders in rivers and creating rock formations on hillsides. Her aim was to increase her power and eventually rule over Ireland.

Local legend recounts the story of An Cailleach Bhéara jumping from hill to hill at Loughcrew, dropping stones from her apron, and that those fallen stones were used to form the cairns we see today. She dropped her stones on the first three hills of Loughcrew, but as she jumped to the fourth she lost her footing and fell to her death. The story goes she lies buried where she fell, on the slopes of Patrickstown Hill.
