FROLICS IN TIPPERARY ANYONE?

Here's a delicious detail to tempt you into one of the best traditional little pubs this side of the River Shannon. We're in the tiny village of Carney here, just two miles from Peg's Cottage at one of the oldest pubs in the area. To enter is to take a step back in time, not much has changed in the bar and snug for a hundred years or more. Some call the pub Ryan's after John Ryan, a former publican who passed away ... others call it Frolic's, Frolic being the delightful name of the townland it's in.

A PUCKAUN RAINBOW FROM HALF AN HOUR AGO AND A SPOT OF LOCAL HISTORY!

I was in Nenagh first thing this morning ... the bustling town about five miles away from Peg's Cottage ... and just had to stop to record this rainbow on the way back. The sky was as black as black but the sun had come out, illuminating the glistening emerald fields, and a lovely rainbow was on display over Turret Hill, Blackfort.

The hill gets its name from the old ruin that's perched on top, although the ruin has no connection with the original function of the site, which was a well-defended stone fort with walls encircling the top of the hill. The fort was so badly damaged during land reclamation in the 1970s that its original function is now barely discernible. This is the parish of Puckaun and although the townland around the hill is officially called Blackfort, local people still use the original Irish version of the name ... Lisduff.

The ruin on the hill is actually that of an eighteenth century folly, or gazebo, built by the local Minnitt family, local landed people, who used it for picnics and the like ... it commands a magnificent view of Lough Derg on the other side of the hill.

MOOOOOOVE ALONG ... NOTHING TO SEE HERE

Just a picture I took one lazy summer's day near Peg's Cottage, rolling Tipperary hills and contented cows, that's all

Sláinte literally translates as ‘health’. It’s commonly used as a drinking toast so basically, you’re wishing someone ‘good health’. Be sure to pronounce it right though … all together now …

SLAWN-TCHA!
