The Thatch Lisselton A Traditional Old Irish Country Thatched Gastro Pub full of history, old charm and friendly faces. L

Permanently closed.

The Thatch Lisselton is a family run business based in North Kerry on the Wild Atlantic Way. Established in 1832, it is one of the few thatched bars remaining in Ireland. Four generations of the O Sullivan family operated the business up until June 2017 when husband & wife John O Connor & Joanne Riordan a Lisselton natives took it over. The old traditional style bar remains and features a welcomin

g open fire with an original pot and crane. The lounge and restaurant were added in 1993 and you can find an extensive Bar Menu serving delicious food and drinks in a relaxed setting. Opened 5 days Wednesday to Sunday from May to September and 3 day Fridays to Sundays from October to April. Christmas opening hours are longer so keep a check on social media platforms for opening hour updates. The premises is located at the foot of Cnoc an Oir (The Hill of Gold) halfway between Listowel and Ballybunion (8 km each way), 16km from Tarbert car ferry and 50 km from Kerry Airport. It is ideally situated along the Wild Atlantic Way North Kerry route. The Thatch Lisselton is ideally suited for tourists visiting Ballybunion Golf Club or the beach and is a major attraction for visitors to the Listowel Races. Traditional music is a regular feature especially with the local wren boys at Christmas time. Located in the centre of North Kerry The Thatch Lisselton is the ideal venue for all parties and functions.

Thanks to RTÉ One, Radio Kerry, Kerry's Eye, The Kerryman and Irish Daily Mail for covering our story and highlighting the issues in the hospitality industry at the moment. If our closure can in some way highlight the problems businesses currently face well were going out helping everyone else. Hopefully the Government will take note at the Oireachteas meeting today and push through on supports the industry badly needs.

We have received so many calls of supports and calls from people offering their services to try and help out. For that we say a huge thank you but our decision has been made.

For us there are so many issues causing our closure...if it was just one thing we could have addressed it but unfortunately when there are so many issues we are left with no other choice...
*Chef Shortages in the whole of the industry
*Rising Food Prices- up between 30-40% across all food products
*Rising Gas Prices- up 44% since this time last year
*Rising Electricity Prices- up 26% this year alone
*Rising Insurance cost- up nearly 50% -being a premises with a thatch roof has its advantages and dis-advantages
*Diminishing weekday trade for both the bar and restaurant in rural Ireland- the whole hospitality industry has changed significantly over the years
*and most importantly our health- the stress it has caused us both over the past few years

We hope that one day it will again be the magnificant business that we know it can be, but the timing and the pressures on the industry at the moment means that we are no longer able to continue.

Tomorrow its back to business...preparing for the weekend ahead...its all systems go now for the next 4 days to get us through...We are nearly fully booked for the weekend...Its Pawel and me in the kitchen so I'll be popping in and out to say good byes...Fiona will be at reception for anyone who still has vouchers...please pop in as we are refunding them in full.

Our sincere thanks to you all.

John & Joanne

📢📢📢Announcement📢📢📢

Unfortunately as of Tuesday 31st May 2022 we will be officially closing our business here in The Thatch Lisselton.

We are absolutely gutted. We have put our heart and soul into The Thatch for the past 5 years but unfortunately we cannot sustain the business in the long term. It is not a decision we have taken lightly. After taking into consideration the effects of Covid-19 on the business, the continuing rising costs due to the war in Ukraine and the chef staffing crisis in the whole of the hospitality industry we have no other choice but to close our doors.

I remember when we opened first- for the first year everyone kept saying ‘it’s so great to see ye opened and bringing life back into the place again’…that is exactly how we felt too. All we wanted was to make The Thatch a wonderful community, homely place to come and visit. We definitely have had our ups and downs but as a whole we are immensely proud of what we have achieved here in the last five years.

We want to thank each and everyone of you who have come through our doors in the last five years. We have been blessed with the most wonderful and loyal staff and customers. We told our staff yesterday so as you can imagine it is a very big shock for everyone. We will honour all our bookings in May but unfortunately any event booked in after that date we can no longer keep. We are sorry for this. We will be in touch over the week.

In terms of Vouchers- We will refund in full any vouchers that have not been used. You can redeem them here over the next two weeks and during June by telephoning us on 087 6768634 to arrange a full refund.

For the next two weeks we will be operating the booking system only as we are short on chef staff to help in the kitchen. Bookings can be made as normal by calling 087 6768634.

Again we just want to Thank You all most sincerely for all your support over the five years. We really enjoyed meeting you all. The craic, the banter, the stories, the friends…all very very special to us.

Thank You
John & Joanne

Our Story

The Thatch Lisselton is a family run business based in North Kerry on the Wild Atlantic Way.

In June of 2017 husband and wife John & Joanne Riordan O Connor, took over The Thatch. Joanne is a Lisselton native and it was always a passion to go into the hospitality and tourism sector. Prior to this The Thatch was a four generation O Sullivan family run business.

The building itself was established in 1832. It is one of the few thatched bars remaining in Ireland. The old traditional style thatch bar remains and features a welcoming open fire, an original pot and crane along with the old dresser which is over 150 years old. The main bar area and restaurant were added in 1994 and has been remodelled to keep the old traditional style interior and in April 2018 we re-opened our country kitchen and restaurant. We employ over 12 staff locally and our produce is sourced local where possible.

We offer delicious bar food, a good pint and a friendly welcome. We have established ourselves as an ideal venue for family parties and functions, whether it’s a sit down meal, a buffet, a BBQ or finger food you are looking for, all are catered for here in The Thatch Lisselton. Bands love to play here as the acoustics are perfect with the high roof.
