Brewery Bar for lunch and a talk from Tomás Ó Brógáin on the Battle of Farsetmore 1567 (a fierce battle between the ancient clans O’Donnells v Shane ‘the Proud’ O’Neill’s army) then a visit to the site at Letterkenny Rugby Club on the banks of the Swilly river where 800 men lost their lives. Many other clans were involved in the battle including the Sweeney Gallowglass and the 9’Donnells were victors due to using the terrain to their advantage to capture Shane o’Neill.

Abbey/Friary’s life began in 1516 by Eoghan Rua MacSweeney a of the local . It was built for the Carmelite Order and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1595, during the turbulent periods of war and English military campaigns, the friary was plundered by a garrison under George Bingham from Sligo. Despite the plundering, the friars reportedly returned and attempted to repair the site. 
But in 1618 the property passed to Andrew Knox, the Protestant Bishop of Raphoe — who converted the nave and transept into a fortified private residence (essentially a fortified house / manor) rather than a monastic site. The east part — the chancel or church portion — remained in use as a parish church (for the parish of Killygarvan) from 1706 until 1814. 
After abandonment as a parish church (post‑1814), over time the residential and religious uses faded; the former house fell into ruin, and the site passed into historical memory. I love this heritage site it’s layered history and beautiful location with views over Lough Swilly❤️❤️❤️

Walking tour as part of the project in with Fergus and Deirdre Friel. Here we are at the battery which formed part of a network of defences around Lough Swilly. Its “paired” fort was on the opposite side of the channel (Inch Island Battery), meaning the two forts could cover the entrance/exit effectively with crossfire. Built in fear of French invasion — during and after the 1798 United Irishmen rebellion and in the broader context of the Napoleonic Wars. By 1817 the fort was fully armed and operational with its planned artillery. However, as technology and geopolitical threats changed, the strategic importance of these coastal batteries faded. The garrison was withdrawn from Rathmullan in 1869. The guns were never fired (in anger).

Stepped through a time portal Friday evening at Dillons Hotel as part of the Ancient Clans of Ireland project. Dr. Brian Lacey - author, historian and archaeologist took us through ancient sites, legendary warriors, family names, forgotten kings and more. Who knew Marilyn Monroe was the most famous Doherty (Dougherty)?
