The origin of the Kilmacrennan Celtic FC Crest
Kilmacrennan Abbey is built on the site where St Colmcille received his education in around 530 AD and later returned to found one of his many monasteries. From 1200 AD it was the ecclesiastical seat of the powerful O’Donnell clan. An estimated 25 O’Donnell Chiefs were crowned between 1200 and 1603 with the religious part of the ceremony taking place at the Abbey and the crowning taking place at nearby Doon Rock.
Kilmacrennan Celtic FC is very proud to have the Abbey on their crest and remember St Colmcille's roots in Kilmacrennan. The club made its debut in the Donegal League on 4th September 1977 down at 'Strain's Field' underneath the shadow of Colmcille Abbey.
St.Colmcille's legacy is being promoted this weekend at Féile Cholmcille in Gartan. See attached poster for more details, lots of events for all the family.
