Great networking by the team over the past two days at the Teagasc Conference. Collaboration is a vital part of environmental work, the chance to share progress, exchanging ideas, and discuss how best to develop structures that support future initiatives. Our ACRES CP teams are focused on communicating the value of results-based programmes, targeting specific NPIs, and highlighting the need for increased peatland restoration.

Red Grouse in Slieve Bloom Talk

We are delighted to announce that Dr James O'Neill of the Irish Red Grouse Project will give a talk on May 20th in Bloom HQ, Mountrath on Red Grouse.

Red Grouse are one our most charismatic upland bird species but sadly, due to severely declining numbers, it is a Red Listed Species of conservation concern.

Dr O'Neill is currently researching Red Grouse to build knowledge around the ecology of the species in the context of habitat and landscape change. His project is using novel techniques such as GPS tracking to track their movements in the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

Red Grouse are an objective within the ACRES Leinster Local Action Plan for the Slieve Bloom CP Region and so we are excited to learn more about this iconic species during Biodiversity Week.

All welcome!

A fantastic learning tour for our ACRES teams exploring some truly special landscapes and heritage in the Midlands.

From visiting Bord na Mรณnaโ€™s raised bog restoration works near Lough Boora, to learning about community-led conservation efforts by the Grennan family and Tullamore Lions Club through the Tochar Project, the past two days were packed with insight from a range experts.

A real highlight was standing beneath the remarkable King Oak at Charleville House. The tree has witnessed 400โ€“800 years of history and still stands strong today.

Great to see restoration, heritage, and community coming together and a special thanks to Brian Dunne, Team Leader for ACRES CP Leinster for curated the trip, and for bringing the weather.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, announced today that balancing payments in respect of 2025 have started to issue to farmers participating in the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES).

Making the announcement, the Minister said: โ€œI am pleased to advise that balancing payments in respect of participation in ACRES in 2025 have started to issue, with the payment of approximately โ‚ฌ37 million to 47,000 ACRES participants this week. This weekโ€™s pay runs will bring the total paid, in core scheme payments, to farmers in ACRES to โ‚ฌ783.5 million since the scheme commenced in January 2023.

Minister Heydon added: โ€œThe commencement of the 2025 balancing payments in mid-April, which is a month earlier than the commencement of the 2024 balancing payments in May 2025, demonstrates the significant work undertaken by my Department in the making of payments under the scheme. The submission of scheme documentation by farmers and their ACRES advisors also contributed to both the timeliness and the number that may be paid. It is envisaged that over 88% of the farmers in ACRES will have received their ACRES 2025 balancing payment by the end of this week.โ€

Referring to the number of farmers awaiting payment in respect of the earlier years of the scheme, Minister Heydon advised: โ€œI am conscious that, while over 99% of all participants are fully paid in respect of their participation in the scheme in respect of 2023 and 2024, payments still have to issue in respect of some contracts. The payments for some of those contracts may not be made until such time as legalities following the death of the original participant have been concluded, while resolution of the issues affecting the other contracts is ongoing. I want to assure those farmers awaiting payments, that payments will be made as soon as those issues are resolved and the contracts have cleared for payment.โ€

Concluding the announcement, the Minister added: โ€œIt is important and timely to note the return that Ireland is getting from the provision of this support to farmers to undertake environmental actions on their farms. This return includes the management of over 285,000 hectares of commonage entered into the scheme, whereby farmers are incentivised through results-based payment to manage this high value land appropriately. Farmers are also being supported under the scheme to maintain and enhance the sward structure of over 212,000 hectares of extensively managed lands, which will benefit a range of invertebrates, birds and other species. Support is also being provided, under the Low-Input Grassland and Low-Input Peat Grassland actions in the scheme, for the sensitive management of over 130,000 hectares of grasslands on peat soils for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2). I am delighted to be able to reward farmers, who are the custodians of the land, for their contribution to a range of environmental, biodiversity, climate and water quality objectives through their participation in ACRES.โ€

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine wishes to advise farmers who are participating in the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES), whose contracts include a Winter Bird Food action (whether Winter Bird Food plot or Winter Bird Food strip), that as stated in the ACRES Specifications for each Tranche, the Winter Bird Food crop must be established by 15 May each year for the duration of the contract. The deadline this year is accordingly Friday, 15 May 2026.

As you will be aware, harvesting of the crop is not permitted and must remain in situ until 1 March of the following year, and that the Winter Bird Food action must remain in the same location for the duration of the contract.

As previously advised in the Technical Notice issued by the Department on 4 March 2026 (available at Update for participants in the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) (www.gov.ie), the establishment of the Winter Bird Food action is one of the ACRES actions being monitored by the Area Monitoring System (AMS) in 2026.

While the Department is issuing this notice as an aid to remind participants of the deadline for establishment of the Winter Bird Food crop by the required deadline, it is the responsibility of the participant to ensure they comply with the ACRES terms and conditions and the associated specifications (and any amendments thereof) and with the consequences for breaches of the aforementioned. A participant continues to be fully responsible for the implementation of the commitments entered into under the contract for the duration of their contract.

April 16th - We held a number of farmer meet-ups across our regions to share information about the NPI results, progress with the scheme as well as provide information on the targeted landscape actions for the year ahead.

Farmers expressed a keenness to work on invasives species removal as part of a collective, targeting specific areas spatially, covering a larger area on connected, adjacent land, which has been recognised as a more successful approach in the eradication of Rhododendron, Himalyan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed and others.

Encouraging also to see the interest in the Geese and Swan action. Many farmers who had made use of their NPI budgets to make improvements to their farm infrastructure are now looking to support this with habitat and environmental actions such as the installation of Barn Owl boxes, bat boxes and planting or rejuvenating hedgerows.

More events are planned for the near future, with dates and locations published online. Be sure to follow us on social media for times and dates of our next information evening near you. if you have any questions contact your local project officer or regional ACRES CP office.

When the bog was drained, the plant communities changed completely. Plants like Heather and Purple Moor Grass (Molinia) that enjoyed slightly drier conditions became more prominent. Species adapted to consistently high water tables like Bog Cottons and Sphagnum became less so. Unfortunately, this shift in vegetation increases the fire risk considerably...

In the short term it does not reduce the risk of fires starting, but it does reduce the risk of hot fires that burn deep into the peat. Higher water tables mean the surface should remain wet throughout the spring fire season; this dampness stops Molinia fires from burning down into the peat.

Read more about how rewetting bogs can have a significant effect on reducing this risk.

When the bog was drained, the plant communities shifted โ€” and with them, the fire risk. Restoration won't stop Spring wildfires overnight, but it stops them burning deep into the peat, protecting the seed bank that recovery depends on.
