An Amazing review by Mathew Nugent on the latest new wine ‘Irregular’ 100% Carignan, from Domaine Les Yeuses. A grape variety that was almost extinct is making a comeback and clearly there is a demand for the indigenous grapes that can withstand the heat from Mediterranean summers.

Grape: Carignan.
CARIGNAN has made a comeback in France’s Languedoc and Roussillon. It was heading for extinction, as vineyards were pulled up, replaced by “commercially viable” varieties. Big mistake.
But important qualities – resistance to drought and heat tolerance – have seen winemakers see it in a different light.
The Dardé family realised these qualities, and their vines, aged 15 years, produce a spectacularly rich and juicy wine. Their Irreguliere, a deep ruby colour, has notes of blackberry, liquorice and spice on the nose.
The palate is elegant, with softening tannins, stone fruit flavours and a little spice. Must be tasted.
Enjoy with: Roast shoulder of pork.
