On the eve of Saint Brigid, it was a popular custom across Ireland for Biddy Boys to go visiting house to house carrying an effigy of Saint Brigid often referred to as a Brídeog. A Brídeog was a small human figure made using locally available materials such as straw and dressed in old garments or cloth. It was then attached to the end of a churn dash or broomstick to be carried by the Biddy Boys. The Biddy Boys were dressed in disguises such as ribbons, hats, masks and costumes made of straw. They would have musical instruments and give a short performance and rhyme at each house as they raised money.

The rhymes varied in each locality but here is one example from County Clare:

“Here is Bridget, dressed in white.
Give her a penny for her night,
She is deaf, she is dumb
She cannot talk without a tongue.”

Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Thursday, 1 December @ 6.30pm

Our "lighting ceremony" for the the Dublin City Council Christmas Tree on the Green at the junction of Manor Street, Aughrim Street and Prussia Street will take place tomorrow evening, Thursday, 1 December at 6.30pm with the Lord Mayor of Dublin.
The pupils from Stanhope Street school will be along to sing some Christmas carols beforehand.
All are welcome to attend this family friendly event.
We'll have some treats for the children and a cup of tea for the adults in the Community Room in Aughrim Street Senior Citizens complex after the lighting up ceremony.

Once the road is reopened following the Stoneybatter Festival family fun day, join local DJ Fromage in Mulligan's beer garden for cheesey tunes, rock anthems, and power ballads, all transmitted silently to wireless headphone sets provided. Running from 7pm til late, there are limited sets available, so book in to secure your place but you can also take your chances and rock up on the night!
