UCC professor JC Séamus Davis has won a prestigious Faraday award for his contributions to the study of quantum physics.

Professor Davis (65) from UCC’s School of Physics has been awarded the 2026 Michael Faraday Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics (IOP) – one of the most prestigious honours in science.

The quantum physicist, who is also professor of physics at the University of Oxford, has been recognised for his outstanding and sustained contributions to the study of macroscopic quantum physics in emergent quantum matter.

Born in Skibbereen, Co Cork, Prof Davis graduated from UCC in 1983 before completing his PhD at University of California, Berkeley, in 1989. His achievements include inventing advanced microscopic instruments that provide imaging of quantum matter with unprecedented precision.

UCC president Professor John O’Halloran congratulated Prof Davis on 'yet another well-deserved accolade'.

'His pioneering work has enabled us to see the fabric of all matter at its most fundamental level, enhancing our understanding of quantum physics and laying a foundation that will pave the way for the technology of tomorrow'

In Tokyo, a unique event is bringing books and club culture together in an unexpected way. Called JUCY BOOK RAVE, the event invites people to gather on the floor, open a book, and read while DJs and live musicians create an ambient musical atmosphere. Held on September 26, 2026, at SPREAD, a music venue in Shimokitazawa, the event offers a different kind of night out, where reading takes center stage instead of dancing.

The event featured ambient electronic music by Saku and Oshiba Komyaku, alongside guests including writer Tsuyachan and novelist Ota Stephanie Kanto. Organizers selected Broccoli Revolution, a short-story collection by Toshiki Okada, as the featured book, but attendees were also welcome to bring their own reading material. The gathering included book discussions, a book exchange, and a shared bookshelf where participants could borrow, donate, and return books.

To create a relaxing environment, the organizers arranged soft lighting, comfortable rugs, and a carefully chosen fragrance to help visitors settle into reading. The event quickly sold out and attracted attention online, although the large turnout left some attendees struggling to find enough personal space. Despite these challenges, the organizers hoped to improve future editions and continue exploring creative ways to make reading a more social and immersive experience.

French entrepreneur Aurelia, the woman behind West Cork crêpe business La Crêperie Nomad, has transformed a 1967 double-decker bus into a fully kitted-out restaurant, complete with a professional kitchen downstairs and seating upstairs 😍

There’s just one thing missing… a permanent spot to park it!

Aurelia had hoped to set up in Glengarriff, but planning issues put those plans on hold. Now, she’s on the lookout for a suitable location with enough room for the nine-metre-long bus, access to utilities and, ideally, some outdoor seating.
