The Nursery at Fota House reflects a period when children’s rooms began to be furnished and decorated in ways that were very different from previous generations.

As the Victorian period progressed, it became increasingly fashionable for nurseries to be decorated specifically for children. Major stores began to offer a wide range of nursery furnishings, including children’s furniture, china, tiles, and wallpapers designed with young occupants in mind.

The wallpaper seen in the Nursery at Fota House is based on a design created in the 1870s and features a number of popular nursery rhyme characters and scenes, including Jack and Jill and All Around the Mulberry Bush. Such designs reflected the growing interest in creating spaces that were specifically intended for children.

The wallpaper is not original to the House. During early conservation work undertaken by the Irish Heritage Trust, the Nursery was repapered using a carefully researched reproduction created by wallpaper conservator David Skinner. The design was selected to help recreate the character and appearance of a fashionable nursery of the period.

Today, the Nursery remains one of the many rooms through which visitors can explore the social history of Fota House and gain an insight into childhood during the nineteenth century.
