Recently, our colleague and friend Daithi Hughes was invited to Haulbowline NCO's Mess by his shipmates for a presentation before he retires in the coming months. Officer Commanding Naval Operations Command, Captain Fitzgerald and Officer Commanding Shore Operations, Commander Rynne both recalled fondly in their speeches the achievements, steadfast commitment, mentoring, leadership and expertise Daithi has given so freely to so many in his 40 years. Warrant Officer Duignam and SPO Ken Holland made presentations to Daithi and expressed the thanks of the Seamans department and wider Naval Service. A great afternoon was had by all, current serving and ex-servicemen recalled the times of "Iron Men & Wooden Ships", and let everyone know how easy it is these days. Thanks to everyone who attended. From all your fellow Non Commissioned Officers of the Naval Service, we wish you fair winds and following seas for whatever is next.

Yesterday at Haulbowline Naval Base, military command, shipmates and family turned out to honour our late colleague and friend, Senior Petty Officer John McCarthy. The Irish Naval Service has dedicated it's newly refurbished Barrack Service logistics building in his honour. Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Service, Commodore Malone addressed the assembly. His speech was personal as he spoke of John and his life in the Naval Service, his love for family, and his passion for his beloved Munster rugby team. Father Des Campian blessed the building as it was dedicated and unveiled by FOCNS, Johns wife Mandy McCarthy and John's mother. Father Des offered prayers for John, everyone present and the crews of the Naval Service. Lieutenant Colonel Jim McCarthy,(ret), brother of John, made a moving speech before the MC drew the proceedings to a close inviting all present to view the building and for refreshments in the Non Commissioned Officers Mess. A most uplifting day and a great tribute to a man who was known to many as friend, confidant, mentor, leader and "Johnny Munster".
