Yesterday at Haulbowline Naval Base, military command, shipmates and family turned out to honour our late colleague and friend, Senior Petty Officer John McCarthy. The Irish Naval Service has dedicated it's newly refurbished Barrack Service logistics building in his honour. Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Service, Commodore Malone addressed the assembly. His speech was personal as he spoke of John and his life in the Naval Service, his love for family, and his passion for his beloved Munster rugby team. Father Des Campian blessed the building as it was dedicated and unveiled by FOCNS, Johns wife Mandy McCarthy and John's mother. Father Des offered prayers for John, everyone present and the crews of the Naval Service. Lieutenant Colonel Jim McCarthy,(ret), brother of John, made a moving speech before the MC drew the proceedings to a close inviting all present to view the building and for refreshments in the Non Commissioned Officers Mess. A most uplifting day and a great tribute to a man who was known to many as friend, confidant, mentor, leader and "Johnny Munster".
