📍 Leenan Fort
Up above Lough Swilly, tucked into the cliffs of Urris, sits one of Donegal’s best kept secrets 🏴
Just a few minutes’ drive from us here in Crossconnell, this one’s right on our doorstep.
Built by the British in the late 1800s to guard the entrance to the lough, Leenan Fort stood as part of a chain of coastal defences right through two world wars. In 1938 the Irish tricolour was raised over it for the first time, and it stayed manned right up until the early 1950s.
These days it’s a quiet ruin with the best view on the peninsula, gun emplacements, tunnels and all, looking straight out over the water 🌊
