What do Shane Lowry, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Nick Price, Brian Harman… and Jarlath Denny have in common?
They’ve all won a major championship by six shots.
And while Augusta, Portrush , Southern Hills and Royal Liverpool might seem a long way from Lough Muckno, there was no doubting the quality of golf produced around Concra Wood this weekend as Jarlath stormed to a commanding six-shot victory in Brian Coleman’s President’s Prize.
Nice guys don’t always finish last after all.
Played in a mixture of sunshine, showers, swirling winds and the occasional “surely this will pass” downpour, the course was set up fair and offered opportunities for scoring but the ever-changing conditions ensured nobody got a completely free run at it.
Jarlath handled it all superbly.
After qualifying with an excellent 41 points, he produced a composed and clinical performance in the 9-hole playoff to finish on a remarkable winning total of 65 points.
🏆 President’s Prize 2026 Results
🥇 Jarlath Denny — 41 + 24 = 65 pts
🥈 Adrian Sewell — 40 + 19 = 59 pts
🥉 James Kiernan — 40 + 19 = 59 pts (b/d)
4th Michael McEntegart — 40 + 19 = 59 pts
5th Gavan McEneaney — 40 + 18 = 58 pts
Jarlath’s victory was sealed in style on the final hole.
Facing an exceedingly difficult recovery left of the greenside bunker on the 9th and with the pin tucked away on the narrow top tier, he produced the kind of touch usually reserved for Sunday evenings on television.
A beautifully judged pitch released out to around 15 feet before Jarlath calmly buried the putt.
Clutch.
Behind him, Adrian Sewell claimed runner-up spot and was undoubtedly one of the shrewdest operators of the weekend. Rumour has it Adrian strategically used his weather app to dodge the worst of the conditions and plot his way to a superb qualifying score.
Some call it preparation. Others call it gamesmanship. Either way, it nearly worked.
James Kiernan edged out Michael McEntegart on countback to secure third place after both players finished tied on 59 points.
A huge congratulations to Brian Coleman and his family on a fantastic President’s Prize weekend and sincere thanks to everyone involved behind the scenes who helped make the event such a success.
Brian’s chosen charity this year was Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and all support for such a worthy cause was greatly appreciated.
Club Matchplay Competitions
Entry sheets for the annual Club Singles Matchplay competitions are now available on the noticeboard in the clubhouse.
Members are reminded to get their names down before the closing date on Sunday June 14th.
There are few better feelings in golf than surviving a tight matchplay battle on a summer evening ... and few worse than trying to explain at home how a “quick nine holes” turned into standing on the 21st tee in fading light.
As always, these competitions promise plenty of drama over the months ahead.
Family Cup Draw Released
The draw for the inaugural Family Cup Matchplay event is now live and there are already some eye-catching ties on the cards.
There may be no Ryder Cup points at stake, but family bragging rights around Concra tend to last considerably longer. Some very tasty matches on the horizon.
In Interclub news:
Garreth Woods’ AIG Junior Cup side safely negotiated a nerve-jangling 20-team strokeplay qualifier at Portadown Golf Club last Sunday to progress through to the matchplay stages.
Unlike matchplay, where momentum can swing from hole to hole, strokeplay qualifying is a particularly brutal test with every single shot carrying weight towards the overall team total. There’s nowhere to hide and no easy holes when the standings are so tightly packed.
Concra held their nerve superbly throughout the day to secure progression to the Ulster South semi-final where an always competitive County Cavan Golf Club side now awaits.
A brilliant effort from:
👏 Ciaran McMahon
👏 Jimmy Lacey
👏 Rory Kelly
👏 Alan Bolger
👏 Garreth Woods
Congratulations to all involved and best of luck in the next stage.
Padraic Conlon’s Tuddenham Cup side take on New Forest G.C this weekend.
Padraic’s teams are always well prepared and fiercely competitive, so confidence will be high that Concra can continue their run and progress to the next stage.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Kernan’s Jimmy Bruen side face Mourne G.C in what promises to be another cracking encounter.
Concra and Mourne have produced some titanic battles in recent years, with the margins often painfully fine and the Mourne men just edging a number of hard-fought contests.
Jonathan’s side carries plenty of momentum into the tie however, and Concra will travel north believing they can finally turn the tables on the venerable links.
