William Reardon(Riordan)

William Rearden(Riordan) was born in 1904 in Reenard two miles west of Cahersiveen, though the family originally came from Glencar, the image above is taken from Ballinskelligs looking over the bay towards Baslicone in Waterville where Williams Family lived. His father worked as a labourer and Willie was the third boy of a large family. The family name was spelt Rearden, though later the spelling Riordan was also used. Like his older brothers Pete and Pat, he was a volunteer with the Kerry No.3 Brigade and during the Civil war he was on active service with one of the two columns that operated in the brigade area.

Williams brother Pete’s fought in Limerick and Cork during the Civil war, we can see this from the military archives record (MSP34REF21521), so it is likely that William also fought there alongside his friend and comrade John Sugrue. Pete was captured in 1923 and remanded in Tralee jail, Pete went on hunger strike and was eventually released in December 1923, Unfortunately for the Reardon family Pete died in 1936 of ill-health as a result of hardship during the civil war and effects of the hunger strike .

On the morning of the day that William was arrested, he along with John Sugrue, Eugene Dwyer , Dan Shea and Michael Courtney stopped at the Shea home and all had breakfast before heading a short distance to a wake in Correvoola at the Sheehan household,
It is said that a “local” man known to the men had betrayed them to the Free State that day and informed that they were at the wake.
William was only 19 when he was captured with his friends on the 2nd of March 1923, it is said they were at a wake in a remote location in the Dromid hills called Curravoola.

They were imprisoned in Bahaghs workhouse. On the 12th of March 1923 , William Riordan, Dan Shea, John Sugrue, Eugene Dwyer , and Michael Courtney, were taken from their cell in Bahaghs Caherciveen by members of the Free State Army , driven a short distance to a roadblock that contained a mine, the prisoners were told to get out and remove the roadblock, they were then shot in the legs first, the free State officers then detonated the mine killing all 5 men.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.
