The original Darrynane Hotel, photographed sometime in the early 1920s. We had to do a little detective work on this one. See that car at the gate? It looks like an open-topped tourer - the spoke wheels, the radiator, the open-top body. That style of car puts this photograph in the early 1920s. Which is almost exactly when the Keating family were adding the bar to this building. A hundred years later, the gate pillars are still standing.

This is the last full weekend we're open this 2026 season. If you've been meaning to come down, now is the time. We'll see you before Sunday. 🥂
Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday - 12.30pm - 11pm!

Guests taking tea outside the Darrynane Hotel, somewhere around 1910-1918. Behind them, Derrynane Bay. The long dark skirts, the high-necked blouses, the wide-brimmed Edwardian hats place this photo in the 1910-1918 range. The men's tweed suits, flat caps, and one visible pocket watch chain are consistent with Edwardian and early WWI-era rural Irish fashion. The folding garden chairs and the formal arrangement of guests taking tea outdoors might suggest this was a "hotel guests" photograph, possibly used for promotional purposes.
This was a hotel then. Bridie's father, Mícheál Keating, would add the bar a few years after this photograph was taken, and the rest, as they say, is a hundred years of history.
Did your family ever stay at the Darrynane Hotel? We're collecting stories for our archive — leave a comment or send us a message, we'd love to add your memory as part of the record.

We offer our thanks to Dan O'Connell for kindly sharing this beautiful photograph from his family's collection.

There's plenty of speculation about who these striking characters are sitting outside Keating's Bar, or the Darrynane Hotel as it was known then. Would you have some insights? We think this photograph was taken sometime around 1900-1910. The building behind them is the same building you'll find at the end of the road to Derrynane Harbour today! Our clues... the women's floor-length skirts, high-necked white blouses with ruffled collars, and the absence of any shorter hemlines. The man's clothing with heavy working boots, a three-piece suit worn for a formal photo occasion, a wide-brimmed hat held at the side is consistent with rural Irish working dress of that era. Based on similarities to other family
photos, we believe that this man is Bridie's grandfather, Daniel Keating.
We're open this Friday, Saturday and Sunday — last full weekend of the season — do come and raise a glass with us before we close for the winter. 🥂

We thank Dan O'Connell for very kindly sharing this beautiful photograph from his family's collection.
