Some 80 years ago, in February 1946 John Joe McGirl was released from the Curragh Internment Camp, one of the last few to be released by the Free State Government. By then he hadn’t even turned 25 and had already been imprisoned for over a quarter of his life. As he left the Curragh with Cathal Goulding on that cold morning, the Republican Movement was on its knees. Slowly but surely they began reorganising the Movement and within a month of being released they were arrested again at a meeting in Ardee Street, Dublin in March 1946. By the summer of 1947 the Sinn Féin party had been formally reactivated in Leitrim and republicanism entered a new phase. This coming Saturday 18th August , the people of Leitrim will gather again in large numbers in Ballinamore to remember John Joe McGirl. All are welcome
