Happy 97th birthday to Thelma Barlow!

Born on this day in 1929, Thelma has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades and remains one of the most beloved faces in British television.

For many people, she will always be remembered as Mavis Wilton in Coronation Street. What began as a small role in 1971 grew into one of the soap’s most memorable characters, with Thelma appearing in an incredible 1,787 episodes over 26 years. Her partnership with Rita in The Kabin and her wonderfully flustered relationship with Derek Wilton provided some of the programme’s most cherished moments.

A new generation of viewers then fell in love with her as Dolly Bellfield in Victoria Wood’s brilliant sitcom dinnerladies, where her warmth, timing and gentle humour made her a standout in an already outstanding cast.

Away from acting, Thelma has also been a writer, gardener and stage performer, and even came out of retirement in 2024 to appear in a short film. At 97, she remains a much-loved figure whose work has entertained millions.

Whether you know her best as Mavis from Coronation Street, Dolly from dinnerladies, or from one of her many other roles, Thelma Barlow has given us decades of wonderful television.
