Kimono (着物) is a traditional Japanese dress. The literal meaning of kimono is clothing or something to wear (ki means use, and mono means goods).
Patterns, symbols, and other designs on kimono help communicate the wearer's status, personality traits, and virtues. Popular motifs include nature-inspired elements, like leaves, blossoms, and birds are easily found on kimono as it typically symbolize longevity and good fortune.
Originally worn by commoners, or as an undergarment by the aristocracy, from the 16th century kimono became the principal item of dress for all classes and genders. It is still an enduring symbol of traditional Japanese culture today.
