Waiki Bar

Waiki Bar "Paradise island, white beach, amazing corals, relax...what could you ask more??" "...a good coffee!!" And so our journey with Waiki Bar started.

Born in 2018 on the still pretty wild island, to offer good coffee and healthy food, as well as chit-chats, laughs, lay-back atmosphere. To find friends and feeling at home while sharing travel stories and the magic of Karimunjawa.

Since Ramadan started last week, many people here have been fasting during the day, only eating after sunset for the first time. That's why their first meal, "takjil", consists of something sweet, to quickly regain energy. We are making "Kolak" for them, a sugary coconut milk soup stuffed with sweet potatoes, bananas and more. To complete the package we add crispy tofu, tempe and vegetables.
As we share their happy reactions with you, we'd like to remind you that you can learn Indonesian recipes by following waiki bar Instagram account and participating in live cooking classes on Sunday morning for free.
If you want to support our Waiki Bar and help us to help local population, you can make a donation to our project at: www.gofundme.com/f/waiki-for-karimunjawa
If you cannot donate, please share the post or link, it's very useful and it will be greatly appreciated!

Among the people we're helping through your donations by delivering meals for free, there are the inhabitants of a very small village at the edge of the jungle. If you come to Karimunjawa, you can drive along a dirt road for 10minutes to visit them, they'll welcome you with their big smiles and show how it is like to live with almost nothing, melted with nature. We're grateful, in this period of still locked borders, to be able to be such a solidarity bridge between you and them.
All our gratitude to those who are supporting our project (gofundme.com/f/waiki-for-karimunjawa). 💚 We hope to see you soon on this magical island!

Lockdown again? Bored at home? Already tried all grandmother's book recipes? It's time to discover Indonesian best dishes!
We'd like to share some typical recipes with all the ones who are supporting our crowdfunding project and can't wait to travel to Indonesia, but also with everyone intrigued by Indonesian culture and cuisine. Let's cook together on Sunday morning at 11am (Central Europe time), directly from the other hemisphere, through a live by our Instagram account. We'll start from GADO GADO, the famous indonesian salad with a super yummy peanut sauce (it's amazing guys, for real). Check all the informations in the pic (if you have any doubts, feel free to ask).
You're all invited, spread the word! 🤍

"My husband got injured, he cannot go fishing for some days, and I was just wondering what should we eat, 'cause we have nothing but rice and it's not even enough...and you showed up with the food!! Thank you, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!" ...and so their belly is full and our hearts too. This is it, every time you do something good, it comes back 10 times bigger. We turn that "thank you" to all the supporters who are donating for our project: all this beauty would be impossible without each of you.
If you'd like to participate and see details of our initiative: www.gofundme.com/f/waiki-for-karimunjawa
All contributions are very helpful and appreciated!

ENGLISH version (VERSIONE ITALIANA A SEGUIRE)

As almost everyone in this crazy time, our business has also been through a very tough year. With the global pandemic hitting right after the rainy season, which is usually the off-season for tourism in Karimunjawa, we’ve been closed since late 2019. We had a lot of hope that tourism would reopen quickly, but because the global situation is still delicate, Indonesian borders are still closed. With all the uncertainty, our optimism and hopefulness turned into disappointment and we even almost gave up. But it would be very hard to give up the happy little oasis we created from zero with so much work and sacrifices, in wich we're giving our best and feeling we're on the right way thanks to our customers' positive feedbacks. And what about all the time, dreams, effort, and passion put in our Waiki Bar? What about the happy faces and encouragement and energy we got from the many travellers we've crossed paths with?
So we thought...this pandemic affected everyone, any bit of support can help provide relief to those affected...our strenght is to prepare good food... Then the idea: with a little help from our friends, we can prepare free meals for locals! In Karimunjawa, strong neighborly relationships got many people through this year. However, there are many families that are barely getting by with just enough to buy food. Many families have been unable to make a living or pay medical treatments because the local economy and jobs rely on tourism. Now, as we continue to hold on to hope that things will start to change for the better in the dry season (at least with local tourism), we have decided to prepare free meals for local families on the island for these months until May. The proceeds will become part of the new Waiki as we all patiently wait for better times.
It would be very supportive if you'd consider a donation to fund this project helping our local community – even the smallest amount counts!
One meal = only 1.5€!! With 15€ we'll already be able to offer 10 complete meals (rice, chicken or fish, vegetables).
If you'd like to contribute, please donate any amount you prefer or support us by sharing this post.
All participation is warmly welcomed and appreciated!

We feel lucky that, as far as we know, the Coronavirus has not yet reached our island. Since the outbreak started in Indonesia and the national government announced a ‘State of Emergency’, the local government has been constantly busy protecting us against the virus. In March this led to the island being closed for tourism. The night market known for its delicious fish barbecue has since then been closed, and snorkeling or other tours on the water are not permitted for travellers.

The government advises traveling only when really necessary and has made it increasingly more difficult to travel to and from the island in recent months.

How happy we are that the Coronavirus hasn’t become a problem to the health of people in Karimunjawa. But we have to face another issue: due to the absence of tourism, more and more people are getting into serious trouble economically and the help of Gotong Royong Karimunjawa, our new Association of hospitality businesses, is increasingly more important. That's why we keep going and hope for your support in donating. In the post you can see the photos from yesterday, second round of packages distribution (food, soaps, gas and electricity). Your donations allowed us to help 125 families this time. Check for more information or to donate
