It is focused mainly on contemporary music, but taking contemporary as wide as possible. Concert program includes different tendencies, styles, techniques, aesthetics and music genres, such as contemporary, minimal music, experimental, jazz, electro, indie, world music, but lot of genre mixtures as well. Depending on the type of concert, music program takes place at few different halls at the Stud
ent Centre which is located in the city centre: Theatre &TD (big and semicircular hall, outdoor Atrium), Multimedia Centre, Cinema SC, Gallery SC, Club SC and concert hall Pauk. Besides concerts, Music Showroom hosts and produces music workshops held by both, Croatian and international music professionals. Few indicative facts from the past, collaborations and productions:
• Music Showroom has been named and “founded” by poet and literary critic Ante Stamać in 1967
• Among other projects, festival dedicated to Cornelius Cardew and exhibition The musical graphics from the collection of Erhard Karkoschka have been produced while musicologist Nikša Gligo was artistic director
• Not Only Jazz Festival and Thirsty Ear Festival took place at the Student Centre while Mate Škugor was artistic director
• Collaborations with Music Biennale Zagreb, University of Zagreb Music Academy, Croatian musical Youth and other national and international institutions
• Concerts: Gary Burton, Herbie Hancock, Anthony Braxton, Pat Metheny, Peter Brötzmann, Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell, Alexander Balanescu, Elliott Sharp, Han Bennink, Pan Sonic, Christian Fennesz, Erik Trufazz
• Jazz muSiClab: Charles Gayle’s, William Parker’s, Amina Claudine Myers’ and Miles Griffith’s workshops for jazz musicians
Music Showroom encourages contemporarity, open-minded approach, inter- and multidisciplinarity, progress, crossing of professionals and amateurs, international collaborations, sharing music knowledge and exchanging creative ideas. With all due respect for what has been done in past 55 years at the Student Centre Zagreb, current Cultural Department’s organization and policy are perfect platform for new ideas and tendencies, young authors and performers, research, education and critical approach to contemporary art and society.
