I first left home; Karachi for Hong Kong when I was 10…. And life seems to have come such a full circle now watching my kids at the same age, navigating the feelings and emotions that I have experienced all through my life.

No matter where I lived since, there were always loved ones left behind. Grandparents, cousins, friends, and everytime I thought this time it’ll be easier. The bonds got stronger as the distances grew farther, but always with a heartbreak.

But dost let me tell you…
It never gets easier
The grief and the gratefulness…. These two feelings live side by side….

But the goodbyes never get easier 💔

No matter how long you go back for… it never feels enough ❤️

I left home first time for HK at the age of 10, and I feel life has come such a full circle with me moving back here with my kids around the same age. I see in them the feelings I have experienced all those years ago…

No matter how many times you say goodbye…. No matter how valid the reasons for your leaving are… no matter how grateful you are for your current life… The grief of leaving your loved ones behind never quite leaves you…
The two can absolutely co-exist.

And the good bye never gets easier not for anyone involved 😢

Wait… what do you mean you can’t just wing it at Comic Con HK? 🤦🏼‍♀️ Oh boy, I learnt that the hard way!! 🙈 My first Artist Alley booth as the ONLY Henna Artist taught me some serious lessons for next year (if they’ll have me again 😂):

1. Don’t wing it!! Your booth is your whole brand in one glance. Branding, merch, decor, pricing — everything needs to pop or you’ll spend the whole day explaining yourself!

2. Have EVERY payment method ready — WeChat, AliPay, PayMe, card, cash. I had to turn away paying customers because I couldn’t take their money 😭

3. Make your booth visually INSANE!!! Comic Cons are sensory overload — if it doesn’t stop people in their tracks, they won’t care what you’re selling!

4. Budget properly!! Booth fee is just the start. 💴 Transport, merch, food, staff… it adds up fast. Make sure you’re not losing money for the “experience” 🙃

5. And most importantly — befriend your neighbours!! Chat, help each other, share payments methods, watch booths, grab coffees or snacks for the other. Kindness goes such a long way at markets/ Artist Alleys 💕

And this is how 25 thirteen year olds at Canadian International School showed me what it truly means to “trust the process”! 😳 🤩 😍

Still in absolute awe and total disbelief that we not only pulled this off, but it looks a 100x better than it did even in my imagination!!

From conceptualising, to learning about mandalas, to drawing them for the first time (all on one day) and then painting them and creating these details on this otherwise plain corridor (all on the second day) - these kids did it all in JUST 12 hours spread over 2 days!!!! I mean WHATTTTT!!!

Thank you for trusting me with leading this project!! More detailed post later! ❤️
