❤️ On this day in 1979, photographer Pennie Smith captured one of the most iconic photos in punk history at the Palladium in New York City: The Clash bassist Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision bass. The image would go on to become the legendary cover of London Calling. The Clash Paul Simonon

Paul Simonon later explained that the outburst was the result of pure frustration with the venue’s security, as the bouncers were refusing to let the audience stand up and move around. “I wasn’t taking it out on the bass guitar, ’cause there ain’t anything wrong with it,” he recalled.

Interestingly, Pennie Smith almost discarded the shot because she felt it was too out of focus. But frontman Joe Strummer and graphic designer Ray Lowry immediately recognized its raw energy. Lowry paired the photograph with pink and green typography as an intentional homage to Elvis Presley’s 1956 debut album.

Today, Pennie Smith’s blurry, chaotic snapshot is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock ’n’ roll photographs of all time. The battered remains of Simonon’s bass are preserved at the London Museum and are set to go on permanent display when the museum opens its new Smithfield site on November 28.
