“Céad míle fáilte,” from McGintys

After an amazing St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on March 17th 2018 Jo, Clare and David sat outside the Cotton Club and said wouldn’t it be good if we can have Paddy’s Day every week. Clare said “well Jo since you have sold the Mythologia Hotel and are doing nothing now why not open an Irish Bar so we can have Paddy’s day every week.” “A Bar” said Jo “yes I have been thinking about doing something like that.” “Have you every been to Ireland?” We said, “No” replied Jo. “Well before you can open an Irish Bar you need visit the Emerald Isle and see for yourself how a traditional Irish bar should look and feel”. So the flights were booked and on April 4th 2018 we all flew from Chaina to Dublin, rented a car and headed West in search of the true Irish Bar. This wasn’t hard as Clare and David had lived in Ireland before coming to Crete and Clare had worked in many bars back in West Clare from the small village of Cree ‘Walshe’s Bar’ to the ‘Doonbeg International Golf Club’ (Now Trump International). For the next week they had the hard job of visiting as many bars as they could find, sampling the “Black Stuff” and comparing decor and colours etc. On their return to Crete on the 11th of April the said if we can find the right location we will consider opening an Irish Bar together.

On the 12th of April Jo rang David and Clare and announced he might have found the ideal location, an old Chinese Clothes Shop which was vacant and ready to rent. We quickly drove over to see the empty sop and all agreed we had found the right location.

Within 48 hours of our first visit to the shop we had contracts drawn up and they were signed sealed and delivered. Together we had to then form a new company and once this was done we could start work in creating McGintys bar (Named after the song ‘Paddy McGintys Goat) which we thought would encompass the Irish and also the Cretan Krikri (Wild Goat).

On the 9th of June 2018 we opened ours doors to the public and are rapidly becoming history, offering tourists and locals the very best in Irish draught Guinness, Magners and Kilkenny as well as Charma Beer (Chania’s number 1 craft beer), in a relaxed living room atmosphere where you can sit without hassle listen to the best in live music and watch the world go by. McGintys intend to open their doors all year round and will be inviting you many events throughout the year including the streaming of Rugby Internationals.
