Co-founder of Norway’s future-facing Ute crew, Ekkel (Teo Bachs) has a front-row seat in the cockpit on their psychedelic flavoured quest. From their woodland beginnings they’ve staked a claim to freedom through music and community, and expanded to include brick and mortar club nights and a self-titled label for the release of their magnetic and mysterious techno sounds. Forest-bath electronics that take stock of Scandinavia’s ambient tradition and cross-pollinate it with a measure of acid, trance and midnight sun. Teo’s own steadily rising number of productions (side project H25 included) has fleshed out Ute’s vision with a personal twist, and there’s another three scheduled for the fall. The past few years too have seen him hard at work exploring the possibilities of sound in a lonely cabin as part of Solar Alliance, collaborating with S.O.N.S on Korean label Junction Forest and producing many more unreleased tracks, some of which you’ll hear here first for a very special number. It’s a wormhole trip that marches headlong from the shadows, shimmering and physical beats that heave and swell, tribal breaks that flit from track to track and build a cathartic mood that harks back to Ute’s woodland roots. Multidisciplinary artist and q***r agitator Valley Dolly is a long time friend and light designer to Bassiani as well as a member of the locally-based Hydrash collective. An eager student of the heady nights of New York underground culture, in their sound there’s an undeniable debt to the house music of that time and place, and the many constituent q***r and trans faces that lit the way for so many who came after. By extension Valley Dolly, who also works under the alias Svecki*, uses their skills and context to probe contemporary inequalities, question gender paradigms and deliver a radical critique of the same in the form of perky and silver-toned beats. Their work also alludes to a wider palette of personal inspirations, everything from the quotidian rituals of Tbilisi life to video games and horror films. All of it comes together in a bespoke and brightly coloured house sound that radiates joy and positivity. Savvy rhythms that bounce along at steady pace, melodies that seduce and blaze a trail from start to closing track with one simple goal set in their sights, sharing that feeling of love and inclusivity. Bassiani Podcast 228 kicks off the heavy burden of patriarchal culture with a wink and a smile and sets its ablaze with equal zeal, an hour of breezy tunes from a cherished member of the Georgian scene, and here's hoping there’ll be many more to come.

Detroit pioneer DJ Godfather turns up the heat for Bassiani Podcast 227. With a story tightly bound to the Motor City and its well-known raft of techno talent, Brian Jeffries’ music is heavily reliant on the midwestern cannon, less orthodox is his personal path within that movement. He’s a key proponent of ghettotech, b***y bass and all-round expletive-ridden mischief. It’s fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and has proven a vehicle for a wider spectrum of influences. It was during his earliest years that he discovered his method after all, repetitive techno with a few salacious bangers thrown in. After decades at the helm of this musical ship he’s as fresh and in demand as ever, five track EP ‘Oh No’ is just out and brimming with the same bouncy rhythms he’s been putting out for decades. Take any of his many bookings, he’s known to play 60-70 records in the course of a one hour set; that should give some indication as to the tempo and energy he’s working with. Surprisingly, his debut album didn’t surface until 2020, less surprisingly, it was 44 tracks long and titled Electro Beats for Freaks. Keeping up? This latest instalment is an hour of highly caffeinated and unapologetic beats recorded live at Horoom, cheeky vinyl scratching mayhem from one of the Motor City’s most notable talents. Motion is key, four-square and quick as a wink, but their techno has moments of sombre self-reflection too. Last year saw their debut album None of the Above out on Offen Music, sounds of ‘glory, decay, rebuilding and hope’, and a second record, Purest State Confusion delivered a second dose of warped basslines and mutant frequencies a mere twelve months later. It’s a start, and a promising one, their hybrid inspirations tease out a thread that’s clear in vision and, well, the rest has to heard and felt first hand. Bassiani Podcast 226 is an hour-long recording from their set at the Morevi Records night at Horoom back in April, intoxicating and ritualistic sounds that rise, descend, expand and contract, fluttering tempos and hazy atmospherics that’ll leave you in a trance.

This next one comes from way out east, the axis of Asian electronic cool named Tokyo, Japan to be more precise. Local DJ Yui is a keystone of his city’s cultural offering, with regular slots at Vent, Womb, Mitsuki et al, and his prolific Dreamescape party has added something irresistibly new to the mix too, inviting guests such as Haruka, Resom, and Bassiani’s very own HVL to his temple-studded, neon-lit hometown. Carefully, methodically slicing up visceral beats, Yui builds a heavy web of dubby techno rhythms that yield dance-focused and clever results. Heavy, full, sweaty and embodied techno, his sound is highly refined and cool to the core, and his sets, for those who find themselves in his neck of the woods, are a must-see. Enter Bassiani Podcast 225: a transcendental voyage from beginning to end, from sinister frequencies through taut echoes, dry beatwork, layers and layers of mechanical emotion, and a delicate IDM epilogue in tow. It’s an hour of haunting sounds that shape-shift and climb then descend back to this earthly realm with the softness of a falling feather. A short decade ago, Galcher Lustwerk seemed to come full speed out of obscurity with a moment defining mix that landed him and his sound at the centre of everyone’s attention. 100% Galcher was a blend of his unreleased works, borrowing from the alternative Americana of midwestern house and urban focused hip-hop, as well as another of his motherland’s key exports: film. The Cleveland native subsequently pushed that vision and its variants further with releases on Tsuba and the founding of label Lustwerk Music, as well as releases under aliases Road Hog, The Fock, Macchiatto, 420 and Power User; the pandemic didn’t slow him down either, with another batch of releases that spanned both rap and ambient with equal skill. A polyglot when it comes to musical genre: for most there’s a little daylight between hip-hop and electronic music, but for Galcher the two are at the vanguard of new sounds, genres united in a constant push into the unknown and discovery of the new, a key modus in his creative process. If any of this is difficult to envision, think lo-fi melodies and velvet smooth house with his very own voice thrown in, a dreamy patchwork of inspirations that are given form by his limitless innovation and nerd-level turnover of hardware. Bassiani Podcast 224 is a four-hour whopper recorded live at Horoom, the DJ/producer’s usual antics in more danceable format, laid back house and a measure of the ‘noodly’ jazz sounds he’s known for, with the supporting role of a driving bassline. 2018’s chilled-out Kiran LP was a first step towards Konduku’s inevitable fate as electronic music producer par excellence. The Dutch performer’s right brain rhythms were perhaps aptly timed, touching a spot made tender by the period of introspection forced upon us by an unprecedented global pandemic. These were spartan experiments in sound that reverberated within the cavernous space isolation prised open but didn’t stay that way for long. With the return to normality came another side to Konduku’s work, productions and real-time sets that focused on a heavier, more techno-leaning sound; though they still took inspiration from bass, sometimes house, and the plangent loops of mid-2000s Italian hypnotica. These beats found a perfect home on Spazio Disponibile, Delsin’s Mantis as well as DJ Nobu’s Bitta label, and even claimed a sublabel all his own on Rotterdam’s Nous'klaer Audio, the music and photography outlet K Series. A highly satisfying alliance of liquid basslines and layered echoes put his name on the rise, and today his relentlessly chugging and nimble beats are very much a known quantity, a unique and welcome proponent for cerebral, subaqueous loops. Bassiani Podcast 223 is top-form Konduku recorded live at the club back in May, three hours of forward-thinking techno that’s thick with ideas and rattling rhythms, far-out frequencies for the temporal lobe that surprise at every turn.

Kicking off full speed comes an hour of untrammelled techno from Belgian artist Phara. The Fuse Brussels resident has racked up quite a following with his club focused sound, both via slick releases as much as behind decks spinning vinyl-only sets. Post-punk, wave, EBM, electro, Detroit and Berlin provide the context for a curious talent that has published warped melodies on blue chip labels like Soma, SK Eleven, Stockholm LTD and Planet Rhythm. His off kilter earmark is available too via his ‘gimmick-free’ record label Phaaar, a more immediate and personal vessel for his own experiments in sound. And it’s not all off the shelf, 2022 saw him take his Korg EMX-1 onstage for a debut live performance that presents yet another side to his many-layered craft, and a new alias titled In Glass promises to reimagine both house and dubbier references. With bated breath comes this next instalment, powerful beats from the get go, tracks with striking forward momentum interwoven with atomic precision and a primary feeling for ambiance that doesn’t miss a trick. Phara taps a wealth of experience and knowledge of records for Bassiani Podcast 222, shadowy frequencies and volative basslines, everything you love about techno brought together by this prolific and multifaceted artist.

Bassiani Podcast 221's next in line and this one comes from Georgian firebrand Charch. Tbilisi’s his hometown, and the place whose steep ascent as mecca for electronic culture in the early 2010s provided the right conditions for his musical passions to flourish. These days, he’s based in Tallinn, and he’s brought his bottomless hunger for records to the local scene there, with the founding of his own record store Biit Me Riga in neighbouring Latvia a much beloved addition to the neighbourhood. It’s proven a trusty vessel by which he’s able to discover new sounds, connect to fellow vinyl heads and build a community around him, the kind of grassroots mission on which the very best of electronic music culture is founded. From a quirky fusion of 90s progressive house, techno, trance, breakbeat, bleep and house comes his hallmark sound, one that’s also found a home (or residency to be more precise) at Tallinn night club HALL. Building selections from an eclectic range of finds, and with a good vibe approach that puts fun and danceable rhythms to the fore is Charch’s raison d’être. This latest one pushes that vision further, upbeat and brimming with his contagious and singular energy, radically optimistic beats from the Baltic corner of the map he calls home.

Somov Records head Ignez is up next with an unmissable techno number that’ll make you sweat. A younger self dropped the stuffy confines of his childhood on the Dutch coast and fled to Berlin as so many do, and there began to cultivate a sound that has placed him firmly among some of his talented and much talked about peers. The DJ/producer credits the seaside upbringing with instilling a deep respect for the rolling tides and endless sands, natural references that are deeply embodied in his hypnotising and immersive rhythms. His occasional return to home turf as resident of Amsterdam-based party series Eerste Communie has also played a significant role in his musical development and found him willing publishers in the likes of Token and SK_eleven, as well as a sparring partner in Berlin heavyweight Rødhåd (with whom he shares two EPs). It’s techno in purest form, bewitching loops that pulsate like those long ago shores. In that sound his ascetic beats are flanked by the most minimal detail and rely on raw percussive might to mesmerise his listener. A dancefloor portal to another world; transcendent stuff for sure. From small club settings to festivals on a larger scale Ignez brings a kind of magic that’s hard to turn a deaf ear to, Bassiani Podcast 220’s proof that he’ll pull those tricks at home too. A hour of virgin, mechanical beats that daze and enthrall, a staunch reminder of techno’s visceral power and of why, for so many, it’s such a ruling passion.

In the long lineage of names that have broken out of the dialogue between Bristol and London, there’s no shortage of pioneering talent, and Laksa is a pretty strong contender for one of the most intriguing. He’s a social worker in psychosis by day, moonlighting as an internationally renowned DJ, a coupling that lends a visceral quality to his productions and sets. His releases have been put out by heavyweight labels like Ilian Tape, Timedance and Hessle Audio, ever driven by a passion for irresistible UK rhythms and wub wub bass. The evident chemistry in his work has taken double form in his collaboration with re:ni as half of re:lax, hosting a monthly NTS radio show and ongoing South London event series, also now a namesake imprint. Laksa’s musical coming of age owes a debt to all manner of genres including grime, dubstep. techno, dancehall and 2-step, the fusion of which has made him a revered ambassador for soundsystem enthusiasts across the map. For this next episode, the Bristol native serves up an hour of smouldering tunes, sprinting basslines and mutant subs: a characteristic trip through the distorted sounds of the British underground.

Born in South Africa, now London-based, Kai Van Dongen is a recently initiated DJ/producer whose transversal sound cuts through typical genre confines and proposes fresh techno with an ambient bent. Born out of the COVID-era, his productions saw daylight around the cusp of 2020’s end with releases on Lobster Theremin sub labels 1Ø PILLS MATE & Cyberdome, Truncate, Ei8ht and Second State. His own KVD imprint now caters to his Bandcamp crowd, providing a direct-to-fan outlet for his raw, unadulterated cuts. Bruising and beat-matched to excellence, his sets have a black hole pulling power that bends beats instead of light, a surprising mix of modulated synths and rumbling bass. For Bassiani Podcast 218, Kai brings together disparate moods into a quick and cohesive whole, both patiently layered and spontaneous in feeling - sparky rhythms that punch their weight and leave no room for doubt: this is big-league techno and Kai Van Dongen is a name you’ll be hearing much more of.
