Here we are, having reached the middle of this “season” of lectures. Now it is time to turn to the events that will become the culmination of the impulse set in motion by the Renaissance and the Reformation.

On the threshold of a world about to change beyond recognition, profound contradictions stand side by side: immense wealth without full political rights, rationalism and free thought beneath the unlimited power of monarchs, economic and scientific progress alongside global wars and religious paranoia. Soon, all of this will be turned upside down before our very eyes: amid the thunder of cannons, the speeches of Enlightenment thinkers, and the roar of the crowd, as the old world sinks into the waters of Boston Harbor and the rivers of blood beneath the guillotine.

Squats of Catalonia:
Autonomous Spaces and the Struggle Against Gentrification

This Sunday, photographer and researcher Nikolai Obglodin will present a photo exhibition exploring the Catalan squatting movement, based on four years of documentation and research.

The term okupas (as squatters are known in Spain) is often associated with negative stereotypes. Yet many occupied spaces have become vibrant social and cultural hubs—places of mutual aid, self-organization, and neighborhood solidarity, where local communities come together to resist gentrification and defend their right to the city.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an artist talk, where Nikolai will share the stories behind the photographs and discuss the history, politics, and everyday reality of the Catalan squatting movement.

I don’t know about you, but the past few weeks for me have been all about festivals, and they’re pretty much the only thing I can think about. So I picked a film about an INTERGALACTIC music festival and the band Vicious Lips, who find themselves up against space maniacs and the corporate music machine!

Great ‘80s music, a tiny budget, and a wonderfully absurdic plot are all included. And afterward, we can swap stories about your experiences at Kupala, LLR, Jandaba, or any other music festivals you’ve been to.
