The Madness has set in and things are getting much better... thank you Belgium for chips and ale... thank you Yorkshire for your feast of wonderous food and beer.... time to enjoy.... time to live the madness way x ๐ฆ๐ง๐ข๐ก๐๐๐๐ง๐
Famed for its unbelievably small kitchen, impressively huge collection of beers, & its rich and varied history, our medieval ale house will always be associated with its quirk
y taxidermy animal collection, and the staff who truly embody the spirit of "Madness"! The building as it can be seen from the street has survived much adversity, through wealth & poverty, decimating fires, and even the widening of the narrower streets that took place many centuries later. Other parts of the city were not so fortunate to have survived, beams & cobbles intact. We are very proud of our hidden tavern's history, and seek to preserve the experience that folks may have had in days gone by, paired with the very best of modern craft beer, locally sourced produce, and served with hearty cheer in a comfortable environment, designed for budging up and sharing a pew!

For the past 170 years, 14 Lendal has housed the old saddlery & harness maker, Robson & Cooper, and so itโs only fitting that an existing York โinstitutionโ takes up the reins of this magnificent Georgian building.

Visiting York and want to relive a unique piece of history? Welcome to these two stunning luxury apartments situated in the shadow of the glorious York Minster, in the very heart of York, tucked away behind The House of Trembling Madness, Stonegate. Both of these stunning apartments are to be found in a hidden courtyard containing the remains of the first Norman House to be built in York, c1180AD. If that's not enough history for you, the detached building is over 650 years old. The Chamber is a timber framed medieval structure, and while its history is unknown, evidence of hauntings have been reported from previous residents. If you'd rather swap bumps in the night for lava lamps & retro chic, you might prefer our Old Gallery! Both apartments are across two floors, and packed with entertainment facilities, all the creature comforts, quality linen & snuggle down duvets, towels & bathrobes.
