Can you help us or tag someone who can?
We're collecting memories and photos of The Jubilee pub on Balfour St to create a rich historical record that can help build the case for better planning protections. This comes in light of a recent application to remodel the interior and remove its important function as the heart of a community.
Designed by Walter Brierley in 1897 for the Tadcaster Tower Brewery, and timed to coincide with Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, it continues to stand as a handsome building. Brierley was York's preeminent architect of his day, responsible for Goddards House on Tadcaster Road, Bishopsbarns, County Hall at Northallerton and many York schools, including Scarcroft School and Poppleton Road School.
Not being nationally listed, locally listed or part of one of the city's conservation areas, there is surprisingly little recognition for the pub's historical association with such a famous architect or appreciation of its attractive features.
Do you know of anyone who used the pub, worked there, made deliveries, or even repairs? We are hoping old photo albums will be an especially rich resource given all the wedding receptions, birthdays celebrations and committee meetings held in the first-floor function room over the years - not to mention darts teams competing at "the oche"!
What's the earliest photo that can be found? It would be great to see how far back we can go! Can we even discover what Brierley's interior original scheme looked like?
