Hello Carolyn, General Manager of The Blue Pool Nature Reserve & Tearooms!
When did you actually start working at The Blue Pool?
‘I began working for Ms Jennifer Barnard at The Blue Pool on 2nd May 1990 aged 13 cleaning tables for 90p per hour!
After taking my GCSE’s I went full time and my responsibilities gradually increased, I served in the tearooms, operated the dishwasher, cleaned, worked in the gift shop and in the Winter, when we used to close, I worked on the mailing lists in the office, did the stock taking and was an office junior to Ada who did all of our accounts.
As my responsibilities increased over the years my position evolved and I became Office Manager. For the last 10 years I was working very closely with the previous owner Miss Barnard, she was a lovely but formidable woman and oversaw the running of the The Blue Pool until she sadly passed away nearly a year ago, aged 91.
As of March this year I re-joined as was asked to become General Manager of The Blue Pool Nature Reserve and Tearooms for the new owners Matthew and Julie Jones.’
What do you enjoy most about your job?
‘It is so varied, I get to meet lots of lovely visitors and work with all sorts of inspiring and wonderful people, we have a great working environment and it’s fantastic and exciting to be a part of the exciting vision for the future of The Blue Pool.’
Do you have a favourite place?
‘Ooh, that would have to be the far side of the pool facing back towards the tearooms, there’s a bench there that I love to sit on and just stop and take time to clear my mind and relax, it’s so peaceful there.’
What is your guilty pleasure?
‘Easy, that would have to be a cream tea of course, with black current jam!’
Does anything still take your breath away?
‘The magnificent yellow Azaleas that flower May/June, with their incredible scent.’
And your favourite season?
‘Spring, because it always meant the reopening of The Blue Pool for the season. Now that we will be opening year round, I’m excited about Winter and all the wonderful festivities around Christmas, the gift shop, Christmas goodies, perhaps a Christmas market, light shows, Winter wonderland walks and maybe even a visit from Santa!’
You’ve worked here now for 29 years, another 29 years to go?
‘Yeah of course, at least, I love it!’
