Royal Oak Meavy

Royal Oak Meavy The pub is a former 15th-century church house inn. It takes its name from the oak tree on the village green, which is reputedly some 800 years old.

This is one of the few remaining traditional Dartmoor Inns, with a flagstone floor & old beams.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Unfortunately we will be closing this week which is completely out of out control.

The pub closure this week could have been avoided..
it is also against the parish council’s own Standing Orders:-

BUSINESS RELATING TO THE ROYAL OAK INN
82. It is the Policy of The Council to administer The Inn in such a way as to maintain its
traditional character and its value as a local amenity for the inhabitants of Meavy;
insofar as is consistent with this aim, and with behaving as a good landlord to the
Tenants of the Inn, The Councils policy is to obtain the best commercial return on The
Inn as a commercial enterprise. The Council has delegated the administration of this
Policy to The Royal Oak Inn Committee.

-:-

We are so sorry that the Royal Oak Committee have not organised it so the new tenants are available to take over next week….
This has caused a huge amount of stress, disruption and frustration.

We will be closing after lunch on Tuesday the 31st of October.

Once again, we would like to thank all of our customers for their support in the past.

For more information on the pub reopening please visit the Burrator council website
www.burrator.gov.uk

Please disregard their statement as it is factually incorrect.

This situation has been played out on social media started by the Parish council themselves in August. It has been a difficult time and we have not had the “quiet enjoyment” to trade as stated in our lease.

Whether its watching Casa Blanca or listening to The Beatles. While we love each and every one of our drinks, we have a particular fond feeling towards our classics...

These are our most iconic drinks, the ones you think of when someone asks what your favourite soft drink is. We know many of you will likely think of Sicilian Lemonade or Hot Ginger Beer.

Not long till we leave…😩

The Royal Oak is very unique in that it is owned by the parish council, but is rented out on a commercial basis… but it is not a community run pub.
We have a fantastic number of locals who support the pub all year round, some every day and some weekly. We also have a tremendous number of visitors who travel far and wide to use the pub.
However the Parish Council imposing minimum opening hours up to 10 o’clock every night would be business su***de due to the costs of keeping the pub open for the apparent local who wants to come in late on a Monday or Tuesday night…!!
After seventeen years at the pub I can tell you it is not and has never been a late night venue, in fact after running pubs in London and West Sussex that was one of the things that attracted me to the Royal Oak.
This is why I have decided not to apply for the new lease, hopefully we will be made aware who the new tenant is soon! The clock is ticking!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my past and current customers and the wonderful staff that have come and gone, who have helped me build up the fantastic reputation that the Royal Oak at Meavy now holds. I would also like to thank the many local businesses who have supplied the Royal Oak over the years. I am happy to bow out gracefully and I wish the new tenant all the best for the future.
Our last day will be Wednesday the 1st November 2023.

Until then - We open for food every lunchtime and for evening meals Wednesday to Saturday.
But please note we do not open on a Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evening as we close between 4pm 6pm.
We do open every day from 11am for coffee and beer, and at weekends we open for breakfast from 10am.
The bar is open all day so please drop in and enjoy a pint or two in front of the log fire.

Current opening hours are:
* Monday 11am ~ 4pm
* Tuesday 11am ~ 4pm
* Wednesday 11am ~ 10pm
* Thursday 11am ~ 9pm
