Hi all … as always hope this finds you and yours safe and well … following on from last nights post , I have included the current river levels for the town ( don’t know what its like up Shiroaks/Rhodesia end) … now we may have dodged a bullet this time but when I posted at half sevenish asking the question if the sluice gates were open and the responses that nope they weren’t and the follow up by Rebecca shortly after saying she had informed the E.A. or council ( don’t know which one is responsible now) to open them and shortly after at 9.30p.m. miraculously the water level started holding steady …….am I the only one thinking we dodged a massive bullet here ? the other question is why did it need the intervention from a volunteer to get the gates open when it had been raining heavily all day and the tea time deluge had been forecast since the day before ? why wasn’t any of the professionals making a decision for an earlier intervention ? I have had a lot of messages as well about blocked drains not carrying away surface water and compounding the already serious problems and Im aware that at least on Allan Street one of the residents had already reported one but nothing done at time of writing … in Retford Councillor Michael Introna is on a mission to report and keep reporting blocked drains until something is done so maybe we need to do the same and inundate the council to clear them …. If I could ask Michael to post contact details please …. Also before I sign off .. in a recent post about pensioner worried about keeping warm this winter I reported that the council should commit some of its massive reserves of thirteen million ( which was correct figure as far as I knew) …now Ive not had that figure refuted by any of the councilors on here so Im assuming its correct … now the interest that figure would make invested at say 6% would be in the range of £700,000 a year so if the lump some is being saved for a rainy day (look out the window folks its chucking it down) then why not commit the interest accruing to improve the lives of the most vulnerable … unlike other businesses the B.D.C. has a guaranteed annual income so why the need for such a large reserve ?.. anyway until next time stay safe and be happy … Roger
