Henley in Arden is bidding for UK Town of Culture for 2028, I believe. To do that the town needs to show how they support culture of all kinds in the town.
Books are a very important part of our culture. They entertain, they amuse and, very importantly, they educate. Sadly, Henley only has a part-time library, run by volunteers. It is open four mornings a week, on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 pm , and 3 hours on Saturday morning. That only leaves 3 hours on Saturday and a couple of hours in the evening for children and teenagers to come to the library in the whole week. Quite often many young people are doing sport or some other activities on Saturdays so they can't go to both. And books are very expensive for many parents to buy, so many children can lose out on a very important part of culture. Some years ago the parish council paid about £8000 per year to the library. The present council pay £1000, which won't even pay for the electricity.
Another part of the town's cultural life is The Hub. Like the library the Hub caters for everyone, young and old. It has clubs for 0 to 5, 8 to 11, 11 + , to over 65 years. And it offers an after school coffee bar for children waiting to be picked up from school. It has table tennis, pool and many games. There a Youth Worker to deal with safeguarding issues that the children may have, and volunteers to run the “tuck shop” and coffee bar.
There is a skate board ramp outside which youngsters play on when it is dry. The Hub has asked the council for £1250 to repair and maintain the skate park, so that it kept up to standard. But the council idea was to get rid of it, which would cost over £4000. At the last meeting the Chair said that it is hardly used, but that isn't the case. It is used regularly in term time and during the holidays. Maybe, in future, the chair of the council should do some proper research rather than acting on hearsay.
The Hub has volunteers to run the activities, but it has to pay to employ youth workers who have to have the necessary qualification for working with young people. In the past The Hub used to have a grant which helped pay for those youth workers. Now the council has reduced the grant to £1000, which doesn't even pay for the heating.
We are very fortunate to have Lawrence Marshall in the town. He has run the Henley arts festival 'Arts for All' for many years. Without him this town would have virtually nothing culturally. A £20,000 grant from the council would mean that he could attract more famous names for the festival. As Stratford Council does by supporting their Literary Festival.
At the last council meeting we were told that The Parish Council has around £250,000 in the bank. What are they hoarding a quarter of a mllions pounds for? That would help many people connected with culture in Henley, and would help with the bid for 2028?
