Pure coincidence, this, but an extraordinary King Crimson double bill awaits fans in Wolverhampton this weekend! 🧡🖤

This Saturday (June 6), we welcome Pete Roth Trio feat Bill Bruford to Wolverhampton Arts Centre, following their triumphant sell-out gig for us in January 2025.

The very next night, the frankly extraordinary Beat, featuring Bill's 80s Crimson bandmates Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, plus Steve Vai and Danny Carey, play at The Halls Wolverhampton!

Can you resist this remarkable opportunity?

Superb German guitarist Pete Roth fronts the explosive jazz-without-borders trio at our venue, featuring deputising bassist Stefan Redtenbacher and legendary sticksman Bill, number 16 in Rolling Stone's list of all-time top drummers.

Pete told WAC jazz development officer Steve Bradley about the Beat match-up:

"They’re the night after? Oh yeah, that might be quite interesting! Maybe people will do that.

"We met Adrian Belew at Cruise To The Edge on the ship. Adrian is just about the nicest person on the planet – what a sweetheart! We spent a lot of time talking about effects pedals, having a really boring conversation to the rest of the world, but we loved it! Of course he’s the master – he’s the original guy with all of that. I’m a huge Steve Vai fan as well, absolutely one of my heroes. He’s the reason I got into technical guitar playing, I love a lot of blues players, but I don’t consider that technical in the Steve Vai sense, that’s sort of next level, which then set me up to play high-level jazz! Because that sort of gave me the facility. I owe him a lot."

Come and see the blistering Pete Roth Trio - PRT, featuring superstar prog-into-jazz legend Bill Bruford, at Wolverhampton Arts Centre next Saturday (June 6). 💥💥💥

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Bruford (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Earthworks) surprisingly emerged from a near 15-year retirement to join ace guitarist Pete - formerly his drum tech! - in this no-holds-barred, jazz-without-borders power trio, often echoing Red-era Crimson... but ever forward-looking.

Regular bassist Mike Pratt is recovering from shoulder surgery, with dep Stefan Redtenbacher joining the thrilling band for this gig, following on from a series of storming Canadian dates in bigger theatres.

Pete told WAC jazz development officer Steve Bradley about why the group had, after its triumphant gig here in January 2025, chosen to return to our venue, among the myriad offers it had had to play in the UK:

"Oh, God, we loved it! Apart from the fact that the sound was great and your groove was amazing, it was just a great reception – what a great audience! That was also the start of us maybe playing a bit more rocky, and we’re going to go even more that way this time. The people were just really responsive – what a great place! There was not even a question – we would have come back any time." 🧡🖤

We have just a handful of tickets remaining for Pete Roth Trio feat Bill Bruford, presented with Jazz At Wolverhampton - so swoop now!

What an extraordinary, unmissable opportunity to see this oomph-laden band in the intimate, vibey setting of our marquee! Link in Comments.

Already guaranteed: a packed marquee at Wolverhampton Arts Centre a week today, for the thrilling return of the explosive Pete Roth Trio - PRT, fresh from their triumphant tour of big venues in Canada. 💥💥💥

We're beyond delighted that this jet-heeled power trio - guitarist Pete Roth, deputising bassist Stefan Redtenbacher, and Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Bill Bruford, number 16 in Rolling Stone's all-time greatest drummers list - have chosen to return to us, after their memorable gig in January 2025.

Since spreading its wings as a fledgling band with its first Wolvo date, this jazz-without-limits outfit has blossomed on the world scene, touring most of Europe, plus Japan, and taking part in the illustrious Cruise To The Edge from Miami - getting ever tighter, ever more adventurous.

For Yes and King Crimson legend Bill, who later led his own successful electronic jazz quartet Earthworks, his return to playing after a near 15-year retirement has shown his messianic status.

Pete told WAC jazz development officer Steve Bradley about Brufordmania - and asked for fans to show restraint at the merch table!

"Bill’s legacy of course is so far-reaching and so wide, and a lot of people, they have followed him from the very, very early days, and when you catch people in their formative years, when they’re 14, 15, 16 and they form great, deep experiences whilst listening to your music, I think that’s deep in your psyche, so a lot of people come literally with a back catalogue of 40 albums to be signed," he said.

"And of course that’s a logistical nightmare. Bill tries to get people to bring no more than three items. We had a situation in Poland, I think, where there were 400 fans lining up, it was huge, they queued around the block and then started rushing the table, and so we had to abandon ship.

"On one side he’s coming out, being an artist, performing something new, and on the other side he’s showing people how much he treasures his fans, who have been so loyal, and making a balance and being fair to everybody is a really tricky thing to do."

Join us at Wolverhampton Arts Centre on Saturday June 6 for the ferocious improvisations of the Pete Roth Trio - PRT, featuring the mighty drumming legend Bill Bruford.

This exciting, open-ended power trio is led by resourceful German guitarist Pete Roth and - deputising for regular bassist Mike Pratt - Austrian four-string maestro Stefan Redtenbacher.

Stadium-filling Bill, revered for his work with Yes and King Crimson, is one of the biggest names our venue has hosted.

The band's blistering sell-out show for us in January last year kicked off a rapturously received, ongoing world tour that has taken in most of Europe, plus Japan and Canada.

The trio loved it so much here, they simply had to come back!

Pete has been telling WAC jazz development officer Steve Bradley about the band's forthcoming live album, recorded in Karlsruhe and Cranleigh, and due out this autumn on one of Bill's two labels.

He added: "We’re out on Winterfold, where Bill's Allan Holdsworth stuff is, rather than Summerfold, where the Earthworks records are. It's with Cherry Red as distributor – that’s also a long-standing relationship Bill has. Blue Note didn’t approach us – we’re all really upset by that!

"I’d rather be a visible artist on a small label than an invisible artist on a huge label. Bill has been running this for some time so he knows exactly what he’s doing. And we’re happy because we’re in control – we’re very much the epitome of a modern band where you run your own website, you’re checking your own contracts, you own your own songwriting, you own your own copyrights for everything.

"We’re mega-excited about our record. It’s the first time we’re committing – where we’re saying this is what we present as our best foot forward."

The fiery improvisational force that is the Pete Roth Trio returns to Wolverhampton Arts Centre on Saturday June 6 - and they have some big news for us all! 🔥🔥🔥

Resourceful German guitarist Pete is joined by bassist Stefan Redtenbacher - deputising for band regular Mike Pratt - and legendary, stadium-filling drummer Bill Bruford, happily, gloriously back in action after a near 15-year retirement.

This jazz-without-limits outfit sometimes recalls Red-era King Crimson - one of Bruford's totemic CV entries - in its fierce and fearless boundary pushing, but imbues performances with its own exhilarating, ever forward-thinking ethos.

Pete told WAC jazz development officer Steve Bradley:

"We’re about to bring an album out. We are maybe halfway through the mixing stages, our engineer probably needs another two days or so, then it’s got to go through mastering, so we believe that by October we’ll have the album on the market.

"It’s all live, I don’t think this is a band that would do as well in the studio, I just can’t see that. We went on an Italy and North Germany tour, so we recorded in Karlsruhe - and we recorded in Cranleigh, out of all places, in Guildford, Bill’s hometown. It’s just a mix of wherever we were lucky to have good mics and where it sounded OK to do something with it. With live recordings the problem is really what type of sound you capture, so even if it’s a great performance, if you don’t have a good kick or you don’t have a snare mic, or all the overheads weren’t quite right, or your guitar mic distorted or whatever, then it’s the ending of that recording, really. And we didn’t want to go down that route where everything gets cleared out and you end up with a sterile track. We were OK with some glasses chinking away in the background and things like that – that’s part of a good live performance.

"So we’re super-excited – it’s the first album Bill has made in 15 years. That’s big news, and Bill sounds absolutely spectacular, it’s incredible when you hear it, how fresh he sounds."

Bill Bruford's on fire! 🔥

The master drummer - he of Yes, King Crimson and Earthworks fame - returns to Wolverhampton Arts Centre on Saturday June 6, as part of the no-holds-barred Pete Roth Trio.

This spiky beast of a band, formed initially as a bit of fun, will crunch through original material and awesome improvisations, mightily ratcheting things up from their 10/10 debut here as a touring group in January last year.

Bruford, then freshly out of a near 15-year retirement, stoked the flames under this thrilling power trio, which will this time feature Pete Roth (guitar) and the deputising Stefan Redtenbacher (bass) along with his own inspired sticksmanship.

Since performing in Wolvo, the band has toured Japan, Canada, most of Europe, and played on the illustrious Cruise To The Edge from Miami.

Pete told WAC jazz development officer Steve Bradley that Bill was still a big story:

"Absolutely, and there's also the facility he has now. There’s something to be said for the fact that we’ve now been a year on the road. He’s on fire!

"He’s got such great energy and it comes through on the drumkit – his ideas are fresh every night, he never sounds tired. An audience member in Tallinn said to us, I didn’t know the band but I came here to see Bill, because I may not be able to see him any more, and I thought it might be one of those nostalgia tours. And he said well, there was not a single bit of nostalgia – he sounds as fresh as anything, and that he would have come out for the band, with or without Bill, if it sounded like that.

"That was a wonderful compliment, much appreciated, really – someone conveying that sentiment of, this is not just a little bit of 'let’s have some fun on the last rounds', but that it was as fresh as the first band he’s been in. That’s pretty cool!"
