The Spread Eagle Lounge bar and Town bar The Spread Eagle is a 15th and 16th century timber framed building with 19th century front decoration and windows. We hope to see you soon.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, The Spread Eagle was a prominent coaching inn and still has its high coach entrance. Among the many coaches that left here for Harwich, Norwich, Ipswich and London were Royal Mail and the Foreign Mail. Witham had many facilities to carter for the large amount of horse traffic in the town and The Spread Eagle also featured a Horse Hospital. When the railways came

in the 1840s the coach rapidly declined. Soon to be replaced by the motor car, The Spread Eagle became an AA and RAC appointed quality hotel advertising ‘High Class Old English Fare with H & C Running water’. There are many legends of The Spread Eagle being involved in Witham’s smuggling trade in earlier centuries, with rumours of concealed hiding places and underground passages. No proof has ever been found of the underground passages, but it makes a good story! Today, the new Lounge Bar at The Spread Eagle is a newly fully refurbished traditional Bar with a modern and relaxed atmosphere. We offer a fully stocked bar with an extensive drinks menu, so there is something for everyone at The Spread Eagle. We have free Wi-Fi & a beautiful courtyard garden which is perfect when enjoying a refreshing drink in the summer.
