Red Cat Brewing

Red Cat Brewing An independent brewery creating imaginative craft beer in Winchester. We don't do boring. That’s the message. Plus the fact that we don’t do boring.

Andy & Iain set up Red Cat Brewing over the winter of 2013/14 as a 11 barrel plant with vessels from Malrex of Burton-on-Trent. Craft ale has come a long way in the past 50 years, but it’s still a rare treat to find that perfect pint. While we’re not daft enough to set ourselves up for a fall, we’re not going to be happy until you folks think that Red Cat beers are up there with the best. Mr M
Mr

M the red cat is a figment of Lindsay Lombard’s wonderful artistic imagination. Cheeky and mischievous, work-wise he’s usually found curled up in a warm corner of the brewery. After the brewery is closed for the night he can usually be found in one of Winchester’s real ale establishments chatting up the barmaids. He drinks: Tea – milk with a splash of tea no sugar. Favourite saying: Is it opening time yet? Regional accent: East London

Andy
Having been steeped in Winchester’s licensed trade since his birth, Andy is well equipped for a career on the supply side of the pub trade. Although it might just be a cunning plan to get closer to larger quantities of beer. Apart from being landlord of The Fulflood Arms for five years, Andy was involved in the set-up two pub micro-breweries in Winchester at The Fulflood Arms and its sister pub The Queen. In his time off he likes to play with full size traction engines and can be found at the Great Dorset Steam Fair threshing barley the way it was done over 100 years ago. He drinks: Tea – splash of milk no sugar. Favourite saying: Why are pirates called pirates – ‘cause they Arrrr! Regional accent: ‘Ampshire. Iain
Rather than plan early retirement he’s hauled on his brewing wellies on one more time and cranked the creaking old body back into action. Unfinished business I guess. After five years running The Flowerpots Brewery there are still lots of beery ideas rattling round inside the otherwise empty noggin. Techniques still to try, ingredients not yet used, and lots of recipe ideas to be set free. Hopefully this won’t all turn out to be the result of premature senility. Talking of which, there is a hidden and subversive agenda – to get everyone in the UK drinking smoked beers like those holy grail brews from Spezial and Schlenkerla. He drinks: Tea – strong & black. Favourite saying: Don’t let your brain write cheque's that your mouth can’t cash
(Bo Diddley). Regional accent: Och aye the noo Jimmy.

Thank you and goodbye....

Red Cat Brewing has entered administration, but I would really like to thank everyone that has been with us along the way, and I mean EVERYONE... customers, staff, friends, family and the awesome open day crew, you have all been amazing during the journey.
However, like many others, unfortunately we didn't make it.

I'm sorry for the radio silence but there has been lots to do in the best interest of the company.

We have had some amazing times along the way, we have had some great laughs and made memories that will stay forever, not to mention making some great friends... We may have enjoyed a pint or two along the way...

I really hope that everyone out there remembers Red Cat fondly, and I hope we made at least one beer that you enjoyed.

So, no more standing on a barrel at open days being heckled by you drunk lot for me now!

Thank you ALL once again. I mean it.

Big love,
Andy

P.S We didn't do boring....

An update from Red Cat Brewing’s owner Andy Mansell

I would like to update everyone on the status of Red Cat Brewing.

As many of you know we took a planned break in January and on returning in February I felt I had to look at the future of Red Cat Brewing more in detail, so the company has been in hibernation.

I am looking for the best way forward for Red Cat Brewing.
As a director it is my responsibility to run a successful and profitable business. If I do not believe it is possible, I have a duty by law to protect the creditors.

I am looking at every aspect of this to make it work and understand the media silence has been frustrating. In the current financial climate it has been increasingly difficult to remain profitable due to the Covid outbreak and huge rising costs of production and the cost of living crisis.
This has been compounded by a number of customers who have not settled outstanding invoices.

All of this has really taken its toll on me personally as well, many of you will know running a business is stressful, you will all be used to the sleepless nights and the stress, but when you have to look at if you can make your business work this feeling is escalated x100.

I apologize to all my customers and supporters about this lack of communication, but I need to do the best for Red Cat Brewing and my own wellbeing. This process has taken longer than I expected, and I do not have a final answer as to what to do yet.

I will update again when I know the best way forward for the business.

Cheers,
Andy

Make sure you come along (not least because they've got a seriously cool looking new bar and updated outside space).

An event page is forthcoming soon!!

It's a new beer!!

T.M.S speaks to our love of cricket here at Red Cat Brewing (the amount of brews that have gone on while listening to Test Match Special is far too many to count) but is actually an acronym for This Makes Sense.

At a time when supply costs are increasing by record amounts, from the smallest suppliers to the biggest, we decided to look to our own shores for the hopping in this 5.6% Hazy IPA. A large amount of Jester and Olicana (two of our favourite English hops for the new school flavours they produce) went into the boil, and then we doubled up on Olicana for the dry hop to get as much mango and passion Fruit flavour as possible. We decided this just Made Sense.

Oats and wheat in the grist make this a seriously smooth beer, and give a balanced sweetness that isn't overpowering, while still retaining our classic dryness.

Cricket (and sport in general to a degree) is also one of the few remaining facets of British culture that can be celebrated patriotically without being immediately problematic and that's why we chose this imagery.

We've got a few Tap Takeovers in the pipeline but if we were going to do one first it would have to be at Olaf's Tun in Woolston.

They've been tremendous supporters of us since they opened their bar during the first Covid lockdown (brave, we know) and the beer we brewed together (Vinur; our best bitter at 4.2%) has gone down an absolute storm wherever it has been.

So of course we had to say thank you (and sorry for having to put up with us) by coming down for the evening and talking all things Red Cat. We'll have a pretty special lineup for you and for them.

We hope to see you there!!

Wednesday 6th July, 6pm until close!! Brewery friends and fans; assemble!!
