What a fantastic day in the woods with Years 5 & 6 from Castle Hill St Philip's CE Primary School

We looked at the variety of trees in Borsdane Woods, did some leaf identification, played a game of 'Meet a Tree' and discussed why it's important for us as humans to look after the woodland.

This project has been made possible with funding from the Nineveh Charitable Trust.

Foots on toast.

Also known as velvet shank & velvet stem

25th January 2026.

One of the only edibles around at this time that prefers cold temperatures.

Picked, cleaned, chopped and sautéed in butter and garlic.

Found in Borsdane Woods growing on deciduous deadwood.

Delicious 😋

⚠️never consume any species you're not 100% certain about. I spent at least 20 minutes reading up in books on this mushroom, looking at its cap, stem and gills, watching videos etc. Before I was fully confident to go ahead and eat it.
