Clear The Clutter Before Christmas 🎄

Half term is a good time to have a sort out of your children’s bedrooms and playrooms ready for the big day.
Charity shops appreciate your donations before Xmas as there are a lot of families that can’t afford to buy new.

If you want to get the kids more involved why not sell their unwanted toys 🧸 on Vinted, EBay or Facebook marketplace?
If they see the money coming in they maybe more motivated.

You can also sell unwanted books 📚 & dvds using the Sell Your Books app. They won’t buy all & some you will get a small amount however you will be surprised what goes for more & it will soon add up.
If you can’t be bothered to sell & if your local charity shop is no longer taking them , check out your local library. If you live anywhere near Abbot’s Langley the library takes donations to sell to support them or if they are very good condition possibly be put on their shelves for lending.

If doing a whole room is too overwhelming break it down into smaller tasks. Why not give each child a box 📦 or bag to fill of items they no longer want?

Loft Decluttering

Lofts are perfect for storage of things you don’t use everyday but don’t use it for clearing the clutter. Some items can be damaged by the heat, cold, damp & possibly pests. We do have extremely cold 🥶 winters & hot 🥵 summers that will affect what we squirrel away.

1. Don’t put important documents & photos up there as the temperature changes can cause deterioration, warping & fading.

2. Clothes, spare bedding & sentimental fabrics eg. Wedding dress should not be stored in this space. They will smell musty, can become mouldy & possible pest damage. If you must store in the loft make sure they are clean & dry, stored in a sealed plastic container & use acid free tissue paper if possible.

3. Other items not be stored there are paints, aerosols, chemicals, food plus pet products, books, vinyl records & art work.
Please don’t use cardboard boxes 📦 as they collapse easily & won’t survive water leakage.

Only store Christmas decorations, suitcases 🧳 & camping accessories.

My top tip is to label everything clearly, keep a note either by photo or notepad. I use really useful boxes which are sturdy, stackable & waterproof.

Paper Declutter

Paper can build up gradually then it becomes a problem however if you get a routine & systems in place it can be eliminated.

Deal with post immediately. A lot of people don’t even open it at the time or never then it just gets added to the pile.

Top Tip
Open post when it arrives & recycle ♻️ leaflets, envelopes etc. Buy a letter rack to put items for actioning or information. Create a filing system & perhaps a filing box ( named to be filed ) to help stop the build up. I know the majority of us won’t file straight away including me so by having a to do pile will help with the paper clutter overwhelm.

Collect confidential documents to be shredded. If you don’t have the space to store a shredder you can buy a roller stamp to cover your personal information & or a black marker pen 🖊️.

I used to work for Ryman & if you own a shredder do not save up your shredding and do for an hour without stopping. All shredders have a duty cycle eg. 2 mins on 20 minute rest. If you don’t adhere to this the motor will burn out faster.

I know a lot of people will be saying I have everything on line now however the amount of paper I find in clients homes is still substantial.

Clearing the clutter really 🤔 helps with your mental health & as I always say tidy home 🏡 tidy mind.

Wardrobe Organisation

After moving home your clothing can be thrown in anywhere just to clear the space with no organisation.
My client was elderly and stressed by the mess & not being able to find anything.

I started by putting her clothes in to categories & put her less frequently used clothing in her furthest away wardrobe.

I took all the labels off her new items which she will be wearing & cut out loopy ribbons that weren’t needed in her pjs etc.

I put t-shirts folded away for next year & took hangers over as I had excess & theirs had gone astray during the move.

Labelling each drawer will help the elderly lady find items more easily & she was really pleased with the idea 💡.
I used the white paper tapes with Dymo labeller as they are easier to remove.

I have only just changed my@summer wardrobe to winter as the weather has been so nice. Always a good time to have a declutter.

Moving Home

Moving home 🏡 is one of the most stressful things to do especially when you are down sizing. Getting rid of half your memories is very hard as everything will have a link to the past.

My lovely clients were put under pressure to move quickly so didn’t have much time to think 🤔 about what they really needed. Decluttering before you move is the best option however not everyone has that time.
My clients were totally overwhelmed with the amount of 📦 boxes left to unpack & another of my clients recommended me to their daughter.
By the end of the day we had unpacked all the boxes & organised the kitchen.
Decluttered excess crockery, utensils, towels, bedding etc.
Lots of books 📚 were taken away to be donated to the charity shop including excess ornaments.

I went back the following week to sort the lady of the homes clothing into categories as she kept saying she couldn’t find anything. I also labelled all her drawers at her request so she could locate everything quickly. Luckily I had spare hangers from home as they were short & weren’t sure whether theirs had made the move with them 😊.

I help wth all stages of moving home so don’t struggle alone if you don’t have too.
One session could help you stay motivated & less stressed. Moving home should be a happy time not unhappy.

Charity Donations

When organising & decluttering your home think 🤔 about what you are donating to the charity shops.
Consider would you buy what you have just donated ???!
Why would any one buy tea stained mugs or chipped crockery ? Would you consider purchasing a cracked glass ?

I have been quoted well someone might be grateful of it? If clothing is badly stained & smelly how can a charity shop sell it. They also don’t get the time or money 💰 to wash all our donations.

Charity shops are really grateful of your contributions but remember most of the staff are volunteers & don’t want to be dealing with holey undies😂😂😂.

If I haven’t had chance to check my clients offerings on the job I always try to check when I am at home. I then sort into categories time permitting.

Wardrobe Change Over

Yesterday my client and I changed her summer clothes over for autumn 🍂/ winter ❄️. We did leave a few more lightweight clothes out as the warmer days don’t seem to be totally over.
My client like myself has to put away her seasonal clothes in suitcases above her wardrobes. I keep mine in my drawers under my bed.

As you complete a switch over it’s an ideal time to have a declutter. My client is going to sell a couple of items on EBay & I am taking one discoloured white dress 👗 to the charity shop for rags & a pair of sketchers sandals that she realised she hadn’t worn all summer.

I rolled her cropped jeans 👖 which will hopefully mean in spring they won’t need ironing.

Clutter Free Gift 🎁

What do you get the person for birthday or Christmas 🎄who has everything & struggles with space & clutter?
My lovely client who is now a good friend has a flat full of things & loves to shop however finding a place for it all can be a struggle.

I decided to buy her a memory which was a trip on the London Eye, lunch & a visit to her favourite shops. Only the photos of the day will be printed & either placed on a wall or a photo box we have created.

Two other clients got a session with me as a birthday present 💝. One of their family members made up their own gift voucher with my company name on which was really cool.

For my nephew George’s birthday & some times Christmas we have a day out which normally involves dinosaurs 🦖 or space 🌒 . We have a lovely time creating memories that last longer than a toy.
The same goes for my great nephew Arthur we always enjoy a day out whether it’s seeing Paddington or Bluey etc.

Think 🤔 twice before you buy potential clutter. Don’t forget tidy home 🏡 tidy mind.

Practice What You Preach

I have been holding on to my grandads armchair forever as couldn’t bear to part with it. I covered it with many coloured throws over the years so it fitted in with my decor.
Finally yesterday it went to the dump after trying to give it away for free 😩.
I have many great memories of my lovely grandad & lots of other things to remind me of him.

I tell my clients not to hold on to too many things that belong to their past family members so I thought I must practice what I preach. I do know how hard it can be when I advise this as I am secretly a sentimental hoarder to some extent.

If you have a large tea set taking up too much space, you could just keep the cups & saucers or just the side plates.
Why not take photos if you have loads & make a little album to keep. If you sell some buy something useful or a maybe a bench or nice plant for your garden 🪴.
