Contest Five: EUROVISION
In the words of Keith Donnelly…

“The year after our superb Dylan Show was another change of plans by me.
I’d announced that we’d try ‘James Bond Theme Songs’ for our next concert.
Some people loved it, some people hated it.
But I actually changed the theme as soon as I realised that England were actually hosting the Eurovision Song Contest that year.
It was too good an opportunity to miss.
We changed our theme to Eurovision Songs and our competitors really upped their game accordingly!
The costumes, wigs and songs were superbly outrageous.
& amongst all the camp tomfoolery the audience favourite was Steve Andisaw with his trusty singing tadpole doing their surreal rendition of - ‘Love Is’.
Though there was a formal complaint from one entry (an enthusiastically, inebriated and hilarious real live European visitor, who’d entered at the very last minute to the amusement and bemusement of everyone involved) who was convinced that he should have won. (He really shouldn’t!)
How were we going to follow Eurovision!?
Find out in the sixth thrilling instalment of -
Keith Donnelly’s ‘I can’t believe it’s not a folk song’ competition.”

Contest Four: Dylan
In the words of Keith Donnelly…

“…and then along came the dark times - Covid hit!
When we finally escaped Lockdowns and Craziness, Warwick Folk Festival was at its fantastic new home by Warwick Castle.
The plan had been to do Disney Songs for our next concert.
But the theme really didn’t capture the imagination of many performers.
So I changed the theme at the last minute when I realised that the concert pretty much coincided with the 80th birthday of one Robert Zimmerman.
I confess I wasn’t sure. Was Bobby D a tad to close to being ‘Folk’ (with a capital F!) for the nature of the contest?
Who knows?
But I really shouldn’t have worried.
The show was magnificent.
It worked brilliantly in its new home - The Avon Marquee Stage.
I’m proud to say that more than a few of the audience came up afterwards to tell me it was the best show they’d ever seen.
My silly little competition - the best show they’d ever seen!
Allan Richardson’s winning song was ‘Sonnet 18 Babe’ his brilliant mash-up of Dylan and Shakespeare.
How to follow the best show folk had ever seen?
Find out in the next thrilling instalment of -
Keith Donnelly’s ‘I can’t believe it’s not a folk song’ competition.”
