I feel this needs to be shared. I was hoping to hear back from certain people first before posting but the silence is forcing my hand.
As of 1st July 2026, the UK goverment is planning to raise its tarrif on imported steel to 50%. While also lowering the quota of imported steel that is tariff free.
This is in order to protect British steel from low cost imports. Sounds great. We need British steel. However given the closure of Talbot for conversion of their furnaces to electric, this means the only place in the UK making "virgin" steel is the site at Scunthorpe. Not much to protect π
This site cannot meet the amounts the UK requires which will mean one thing. Steel prices going up. Which affects everything. Blacksmiths, fabrication companies, construction.
Common sense needs applying here. With costs of fuel etc already high this could affect alot of business and trades. Impose these tariffs when the production of steel in the Uk is in a position to meet demand. Not just to fill someone in the goverments pockets.
Rant complete
