Oh yes please!

Sandeman’s 1935 Vintage Port. Now 91 years old.

Known as the ‘Jubilee Vintage’, it commemorates King George V’s Silver Jubilee.

It also caused a stir when it came to bottling in 1937. Merchants would normally buy Port in cask and bottle it themselves, but Sandeman announced it would handle the entire vintage in-house to ensure consistency.

That didn’t go down well with everyone, but it helped change how Port was sold.

This was hard to get hold of even when it was new.

Taittinger Comtes de Ch*****ne 2002, in magnum.

2002 ranks among Ch*****ne’s great vintages, but production of this particular w**e was unusually small. On release, Antonio Galloni awarded it 98 points and specifically recommended tracking down magnums, describing a w**e capable of ageing for decades.

Made entirely from Chardonnay grown in five Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs, Comtes is Taittinger’s flagship Ch*****ne.

With age, those layers of citrus and orchard fruit develop into brioche, toasted nuts and richer, more complex flavours.

Salon is one of Ch*****ne’s most extraordinary houses, producing a vintage only when it believes the year is worthy.

And 2008 was very special.

The quality was so high, and the crop so small, that Salon took the remarkable decision to produce the entire vintage in magnum.

Just 8,000 magnums were made. No standard bottles.

Rather than releasing them individually, Salon created this assortment case, pairing one magnum of the 2008 with two bottles each of Salon 2007, 2006 and 2004.

All from one of Ch*****ne’s great Blanc de Blancs producers, made entirely from Chardonnay grown in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

A pretty remarkable piece of Ch*****ne history.

1961 Château Branaire-Ducru.

A Fourth Growth from Saint-Julien, from one of the great Bordeaux vintages of the 20th century.

1961 was tiny in quantity, but exceptional in quality, producing powerful, concentrated w**es that have gone on to live for decades.

More than 60 years later, this was still very much alive.

Old Bordeaux isn’t always about perfection. Sometimes the fascination is simply seeing what has survived, how it has evolved and what remains in the glass after six decades.

Krug acquired Clos du Mesnil in 1971, originally with the intention of using its Chardonnay in Krug Grande Cuvée.

Then came 1979.

The fruit from this tiny walled vineyard was so impressive that Krug decided to bottle it on its own for the first time.

Clos du Mesnil was born.

The vineyard itself covers just 1.84 hectares in the middle of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, its walls dating back to 1698. One vineyard, 100% Chardonnay and only made when Krug believes the year warrants it.

2002 was just the 16th release.

13,278 bottles were produced.

And only 500 magnums.

A very special arrival at Seckford.

1995 was a very good Bordeaux vintage. After a wet start to the year, conditions turned warm and dry, with temperatures reaching 37°C. Mouton harvested from 12–27 September, producing a w**e made from 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.

And then there’s that label.

It was created by Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies.

Tàpies was no conventional painter. He became famous for mixing paint with things like sand, plaster, fabric, rope and wire, creating rough, almost damaged-looking works. He had originally studied law before abandoning it to pursue art, eventually becoming one of Spain’s most internationally recognised artists.

For Mouton he went deliberately simple: a nose, two hearts, a mouth and an eye, representing the senses and pleasure involved in drinking great w**e.

So yes, it might look like a five-year-old drew it.

But stick that drawing onto a magnum of 1995 Mouton Rothschild and suddenly it becomes rather more interesting.

A 1979 Château Mouton Rothschild Jeroboam.

For this vintage, Mouton commissioned Japanese artist Hisao Domoto to create the artwork, the first Japanese artist ever to design a Mouton Rothschild label.

The label itself even records the scale of the vintage: 292,540 bottles and half-bottles, alongside just 4,510 magnums and jeroboams.
