Trowbridge Walking Rugby returned from the Dorset & Wiltshire Fair Play Festival as worthy champions, capping off a scorching day of rugby with teamwork, grit, and the kind of spirit the festival was built for.
With temperatures pushing into the high 20s, hydration and smart rotation were the order of the day. Our squad - Victoria, Allan, Tom, Aaron, Pete, Del, Martin, Alex, Vivvers and Kev - took to the pitches ready for four tough fixtures against Royal Wootton Bassett, Devizes, Salisbury, and Amesbury.
Fair Play First - The festivalโs scoring system rewarded not just results, but fair play, teamwork, and collective try scoring. Each team earned a referee awarded score from 1โ6 per match, plus bonus points for tries created through team play rather than solo breaks.
This suited Trowbridge perfectly. Even though the tries came from just two finishers - Tom (5) and Alex (3) - every score was the result of interlinking phases, patient build up, and all ten players contributing to the moves. Exactly what walking rugby is all about.
Despite the heat and smaller squad compared with some opponents, the teamโs try line defence, which has been steadily improving all season, proved crucial in tight moments. Communication was sharp, positioning was disciplined, and everyone dug in when it mattered.
When all the fair play scores and team try bonuses were added up, Trowbridge emerged victorious, winning the Dorset & Wiltshire Fair Play Walking Rugby Festival 2026.
A brilliant achievement, and one built on teamwork, spirit, and a commitment to playing the game the right way.
A huge thank you to Devizes RFC for hosting this yearโs festival and to Dorset & Wilts RFU for organising such a welcoming, enjoyable event.
