Tredegar Arms, Rhymney If you came here looking for a different TA (which is very likely, as we've had a lot of unexpected "likes" lately), you're very welcome!

We've been charting the ups and downs of our renovation project here for the past three years or so. 🫣

Just to reassure everyone, nobody broke in last night, although the intruder did try all the doors. We've got several CCTV cameras, security lights and an alarm. And a very unforgiving attitude towards anyone setting foot on our property. 😡

🚨 We had an intruder on the premises last night 🚨

Fortunately all our cameras do work, so we've got some great images of him. We have also heard that he was trying car doors in the Tan Y Bryn and Moriah Street area between 1.30am-2.30am and other people have footage too, so check your cars and your cameras! We will be handing our footage over to the police.

Does anyone remember the payphone in the corridor leading to the pool room? We decided to save it rather than just throw it away, as we thought it might have value as a "modern antique". Our friend Hywel, who is an avid phone collector, then found out about it so we decided to give it to him. It looks like he's going to treasure it. 🥹

Apologies for the long silence again, but there's still not much to report. We're now busy looking for a contractor to complete repairs to the bar floor and cellar, so any recommendations would be most welcome. However, talking about the cellar, we've had spooky goings-on this evening when It's My Shout Productions ventured down there to record footage for a short film they're doing for the BBC. More information to follow, but for now here are some teasers from the filming...

EDIT: Have added a photo from someone who lives in Tan Y Bryn, and sees him every day. Photo was taken in December 2022, so it looks like he's been hanging around for over 12 months.

A ginger cat has been hanging around the pub for a few weeks now, and appears to have taken up residence in our smoking shelter. Does anyone know if he has an owner? We're going to try to get him scanned for a chip if not. We haven't got a photo, but here is a screenshot from someone else's post. Does anyone local have a trap to help catch him? He's very skittish. Area is Hill Street/Benjamin Court in Lower Rhymney.

Lots of news to share, but firstly the bad news: unfortunately we weren't able to save the hatch after all - it was beyond repair. 😞 We're very sad about this, as it was something we really wanted to keep. However the good news is that someone had the bright idea of creating a new opening for the bar there, meaning we could block off the original door and create a little snug area. It does work really well. Meanwhile, we're still painting, and likely to be for some time. 😅 Fortunately Tom's back from Glasto now, so we're hoping he'll finish the ceiling - we did have a go, but the ladder was a bit wobbly. 😲 N k Perrett plumbing and heatig ltd are back this week, and have fitted some fabulous new radiators in the bar. We're really pleased with them. So as you can see we're really moving forward now. However we've also still got some really big problems to resolve, so it will be some time before we can open. The flooring is one big thing, and that's going to involve some serious investigation, which will also include the cellar. Another problem is that the current set up in the loos won't be sparing any blushes... 😳

Then and now: July 2022 versus June 2024... They're fitting the radiators downstairs on Monday, so we've been busy putting colour on the walls where they're going to go. We'll put this colour on the bottom of all the walls eventually, and grey on the top (above a dado rail).

Inspired by our majestic fireplace, we've decided to go a bit grand with the lighting. In the mirror, you can see one of three chandeliers. 😂 It's starting to look fantastic, though. More photos to follow.

Here are the promised photos! The electricians and heating engineers have finished for now, and we've been left with an overwhelming maze of pipes and cables. 😵‍💫 However, fortunately, Julian and team are busy boarding and plastering it all out of sight. Very little has actually changed. We removed the front part of the bar and discovered a blocked up door there, so we've opened that back up (does anyone remember the original door? 🤔) We're going to widen what was the back part of the bar to form a square, and what was the ladies will become a unisex toilet with two cubicles. Only this front part of the building will be open to the public, as we're creating a kitchen at the back and using the rest for storage for now.
