Ben's Wine & Tapas

Ben's Wine & Tapas Good food and wine from good farming - a relaxed, friendly, venue sourcing local and seasonal ingred We’d also like to tell you about the wine.

We’ve always taken our wine seriously but being a farm shop, steeped in all things local, it’s hard to show our full credentials. We want to introduce you to new and exciting wines from around the world at fair prices that represent the wines real value. The quality of what you get in your bottle makes exponential leaps from supermarket entry level prices but once you get to a certain point it see

ms as though you’re paying for a name and not much else. So we’ll be concentrating on mid-range, £8-£15 wines because that’s where the value is. They’ll be for sale to takeaway or, with a £6 corkage charge, to drink in. That way you can enjoy a fantastic bottle of wine for the price of a few pints in the pub. Most of it will be from farmer/winemakers so it’s a true farm product. As much as possible, we buy straight from the producer so although not local in geographic terms, in spirit and ethos it definitely is. When we say tapas, I admit we’re generalising. What we mean are small plates of tasty but simle food served quickly, with, or just after you get your drink – as in a traditional tapas bar that doesn’t have pretentions to be a restaurant. Much will be Spanish themed, with a bit of North African, Mexican and Middle Eastern. There will even be a bit of the best of British – one of our bangers with a dollop of Tracklements mustard takes a lot of beating. There’ll be local, seasonal and dietary variations and with organics, the sourcing will be the same as the rest of the business – i.e. the vast majority will be organic but most of the recipes won’t be certified. Last year, at our kitchen on the farm, 98% of the ingredients were organic but only 65% of what we produced was. We’d be the first to admit that the whole thing is a bit self-indulgent. Over thirty years plus in the food business, I’ve come across so many things, both food and drink, that I really like. Many we sell in the shops but, for one reason or another, some we don’t. So Ben’s Wine & Tapas is about the things we want to eat and drink. We hope you do too and we’ll see you there!

CLOSING OUR DOORS
“It is with great sadness that Ben’s Wine & Tapas is closing its doors on Saturday 20th May. We’ll be reopening for the ‘Taste of Devon’ English wine evening on the 7th June but the 20th will be our last day of normal trading.

This has been a difficult decision, however, over the past three years, we have faced incredible on-going difficulty with staffing with no foreseeable end. Fortunately, the shops are doing well but for the last few months, keeping the bar open has meant robbing Peter to pay Paul and means that keeping the bar open is now no longer feasible. We are in the fortunate position where we are able to offer our current team roles in other parts of the business.

We would like to take this time to thank everyone; our wonderful staff, suppliers, customers and the people of Totnes, for helping make the bar such a great place over the last six years.
Without you, Ben’s Wine & Tapas could not have been as successful as it was.

It’s been an experience but all good things come to an end.

It really has been a pleasure,

Ben & Harry”

Wine of the Month
For a truly outstanding and affordable drink, we have a bottle-fermented apple wine (aka cider) as our April Wine of the Month.
Based in Hertfordshire, the Four Acres Estate is a small family run vineyard and orchard led by Platon Loizou. His retirement labour of love, Four Acres have been making English sparklings for over a decade now and this ‘method champenoise’ cider is a stupendously great example of the work they’re doing. The cider stays on its lees for up to six months to create its characteristic dry, sparkling & smoky flavour. The traditional champagne method gives it a biscuity yeast flavour & on the nose expect wooden barrels & smoked apples.
As Platon is a regular customer of our Totnes , it was only a matter of time until we had Four Acres on the shelves and at just £10 a bottle it’s a steal.

Osso Buco
This deliciously tender dish of braised veal shanks & gremolata was a special for our recent Italian wine tasting. Braised in white wine and paired with the lively accompaniment of parsley, lemon zest & garlic, this classic Italian dish is hard to beat. “Osso buco” translates to “hole of the bone” as the marrow provides the rich flavour to the stew.
Who thinks we should bring this special back?
