As Chairman of local cricket club Cowdrey and owner of the George & Dragon I felt the need to try to help this cause on hearing the following news. This week the committee received some bad news regarding a family member of our treasurer Joanna Yeats-Brown.
In September 2021, on her very first day of her dream job as a Maths Teacher at a Kent secondary school, 28 year old Jenny Yeats-Brown was diagnosed with GBM4, the rarest and most aggressive form of brain cancer there is. GBM4 is otherwise known as Glioblastoma and has recently been brought to public attention in the documentary βInside My Headβ by The Wantedβs Tom Parker, who sadly recently died from the disease.
With an average lifespan after diagnoses of 12 β 15 months, there is currently no cure. However, there is an immunotherapy treatment available in Germany that could extend Jennyβs life for approximately 8 more years. The hope is that this treatment will enable science to find a way to manage the condition or even a cure in the extra time she could get. It is for this reason that an appeal has been made to raise the Β£50,000 needed for this treatment. As teachers, this amazing, giving, family are simply not in the financial position to pay for Jennyβs treatment and are currently struggling to even cover her mortgage and living expenses as she is unable to work. Two of jennyβs friends have started a Gofundme site where donations will go towards this, as I write this the total raised so far is Β£42,780.
The Yeats-Browns have been at Cowdrey for many years now with Jennyβs brothers Ralph and Xavier current playing members and mother Joanna the current Treasurer. Joanna has also been at the forefront of fundraising through many grant applications for various projects that CCC have undertaken over the past few years, including raising Β£50,000 for the net facilities the club now enjoys.
For this reason we have decided that we need to try to do our bit for the family helping with the fundraising effort. We are holding a Race Night on Friday 3rd June, this is a Bank Holiday as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, so it is a long weekend for everybody and a good opportunity to stage the event. It will take place at the George and Dragon, from 7pm. There will be 8 races over the course of the evening with supporters having the chance to have a flutter on the tote whilst cheering on your horse. The first 5 races are being sold for Β£20 each, with the winning owner receiving Β£80. The final 3 races will be auctioned on the night. If you are able to make it along on the evening it really will make a difference to the fundraising as well as hopefully having a fun evening. If you are interested in buying a horse in the first 5 races please contact me through this email or 07952 908716.
There are other ways in which you can help should you so wish. The link to the Gofundme page is https://paypal.com/pools/c/118223093701771440. We are also raffling a signed framed photo of cricket legend Ian Botham and an authenticated signed autobiography by Shane Warne, tickets are Β£5 each and it will be drawn at the race night.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Regards
