FOOTBALL, BLOOMS AND BELOVED LANDMARKS: THE BLACK HORSE’S WORLD CUP MURAL
The Black Horse is proud to host an extraordinary mural on the side of our pub, painted by Thetford's own Joey La Meche.
The mural was commissioned as part of our entry to Anglia in Bloom, which this year features a World Cup-themed virtual category.
The Black Horse was selected by Thetford Town Council to enter the competition and along with our gardens we created the mural to celebrate 60 years since England won the World cup.
At the heart of the piece, the most iconic images in English sporting history: Bobby Moore, captain, leader, and gentleman, holding the World Cup aloft at Wembley. There is no better place to honour that sunny afternoon in 1966 than on the wall of our pub, the very kind of place where a nation held its breath, then erupted with joy.
Surrounding Bobby Moore, Joey has painted some of Thetford's most cherished landmarks, grounding that moment of national triumph in the life of our own town. It is a reminder that great history is not only made at Wembley - it is felt in places like Thetford, in communities like ours, in pubs like The Black Horse.
The mural would not have been possible without the generous support of our wonderful sponsors, to whom we are enormously grateful: AMAS Investments, Max the Barber, Location Location, AQB Group and JRG GAS Services Thetford
Their backing is a testament to the community spirit that makes Thetford such a special place, and we are proud to have such local businesses standing behind this project.
Terry Gillman, landlord of The Black Horse, said: "We are incredibly proud of this mural. Joey has managed to put so much into it - the history of England's greatest footballing moment, the landmarks that make Thetford special, and the flowers that reflect our entry into Anglia in Bloom.
It is a real conversation piece and we are honoured to have it on our walls. Come and have a look - and stay for a pint."
Joey La Meche said: "It has been a longstanding dream of mine to paint on the side of the Black Horse and I am grateful to Pam and Terry for the chance. This mural represents colour, growth, and community pride alongside sporting legends and local landmarks."
The Black Horse raises a glass to England, to Thetford in Bloom, to sixty years of hope - and to everyone who helped make this mural happen.
