We’re open as normal from 10:00am tomorrow.

The building is safe, but there is still some remedial work taking place. So if you hear the odd bang or see tradesmen about over the next few days, that will be them finishing things off into the early part of next week.

It has been a whirlwind few days, but what has really stood out is how the community has pulled together. From tradesmen turning out at short notice and working late into the night, to those who have sent messages, stopped for a chat, or simply given a wave in the street, I have been genuinely humbled by it all.

When I took on the renovation of The Black Bear, my goal was to make it part of Tewkesbury’s civic life, a place for the town to come together, to celebrate, commiserate, enjoy events, good beer, and good company. It has felt as though during the course of this week every bit of effort we have put in has been repaid by the good people of this town. I am incredibly grateful.

It is business as normal from tomorrow. We will have live racing from Cheltenham through the day, Eubank v Benn on the big screen tomorrow night, and live music from Copperhead. We cannot wait to welcome you all back.

Thank you, Tewkesbury.

***The Black Bear will reopen tomorrow morning. Please see our latest post for details.***

Earlier this evening there was a fire in the attic area of the pub. Thanks to the quick action of our staff, the cooperation of our customers, and the prompt response from Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue, the fire was contained to a small area and the premises were evacuated safely. As a precaution, The Black Bear will remain closed until further notice.

We will provide an update once the appropriate services have carried out their inspections and carried out any repairs and remedial work to ensure the building is safe to reopen. We will not reopen until full clearance has been given.

We would like to thank Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue for their prompt response, our patrons for their cooperation, and our staff for the efficient evacuation. We are also grateful for the messages of support received this evening.

We apologise for any disruption caused and appreciate your understanding.

Luke

Remembrance Sunday at The Black Bear

This Sunday, we will be pausing to honour and remember all servicemen and women. Past and present. who have served our country. As a gesture of our gratitude, we will be offering a free drink to anyone who has served in the Armed Forces.

This will be run on honesty and respect policy. We trust our veterans and patrons; a day of remembrance is not the time to question anyone’s integrity. It is simply our way of showing appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

Tewkesbury Pub Singers will be joining us to perform traditional hymns, helping create a fitting and respectful atmosphere

A separate note for today (Friday):
Today marks two years since our kitchen opened, and to celebrate we will have Thai dancing from 6:30pm here at The Black Bear.
A very different tone to Sunday’s commemorations, but a nice way to kick off the weekend.

Oktoberfest at The Black Bear Year 3

Oktoberfest returns to the Bear this weekend, our third year running and we’re looking forward to another great few days together.

Across Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October, we’ll be serving a line-up of authentic German beers, alongside a few guest ales for the real ale drinkers. This year’s selection includes:
• Hoffmeister Helles – 5%
• Hoffmeister Weisse – 5.1%
• Weihenstephaner Festbier – 5.8%
• Weihenstephaner Dunkel – 5.3%
• Spaten Münchner – 5.2%

Weihenstephaner is the oldest brewery in the world est 1040. Weihenstephaner festbier at 5.8% is only brewed for Oktoberfest and has been imported directly from Germany.

We’re also pleased to have Old Peculier from the wood once again, poured in the beer hall with another six guest ales joining it over the weekend.

Food this year will be something different.
Thai–German fusion menu alongside traditional smoked meats prepared by Marius.

As always, the Tewkesbury Town Band will be with us as our Oompah band throughout the weekend. Around them we’ve put together a full programme of live music:

Friday
17:00 Sax Appeal
19:00 Black Rat
21:00 Casual 6

Saturday
13:00 Jimmy Moore
16:00 Bootsy
18:30 Corpotinas
21:00 EDM
Late German Techno

Sunday
13:00 Strum n Bass
15:00 AZ Acoustic
17:00 Fair Weather Riders

We’re keeping the tradition of good beer, good food, and plenty of music, all under one roof here at the Bear.

We look forward to welcoming you this weekend. Prost! 🍺

Oktoberfest at The Black Bear begins tomorrow

We’re pleased to offer an authentic experience this weekend with carefully selected food, beer, and live music, accompanied by a traditional Oompah band. For the real ale connoisseurs, we have a rare treat: Theakston Old Peculier in wooden casks.

These wooden casks are the only ones of their kind outside Yorkshire, personally delivered by William Theakston from the family’s brewery. By purchasing directly from Theakston, we ensure the highest quality, avoiding the issues often caused by lengthy distribution and inadequate storage conditions.

Old Peculier from the wooden cask will be served from its own dedicated bar in the beer hall, starting at 3:00 PM tomorrow.

Our line up for the weekend is as follows:

Friday, 4th October
Jonny Clash – 18:00
Kickback – 21:00

Saturday, 5th October
Vo Fletcher – 13:00
Sax Appeal – 15:00
Run Yoshi Run – 18:00
Crispin – 21:00

Sunday, 6th October
Moving on Up – 14:00
Ben Napper – 17:00
Quarter Notes – 20:00

Throughout the weekend, the Tewkesbury Town Band will be performing as this year’s Oompah band. After the live performances conclude in the beer hall, we’ll also have a live DJ inside to continue the atmosphere.

We look forward to welcoming you this weekend.

Gutted the boys didn’t have enough to finally bring it home. However, let’s not let this overshadow what has been a great tournament with many big moments and memories made. We apologise and thank you for your patience during our technical difficulties with the big screen. It appears the main switchboard that sends the signal from the Sky box to the screen failed, simultaneously damaging four cables that sent the signal to screens around the pub. Like the England team, we will make sure we come back bigger and better next time. Thanks again from the Black Bear team 🐻
