We’re proud to be part of a vibrant hospitality community that sits at the heart of village life.

Pubs like ours are more than just places to eat and drink – they are meeting points, workplaces, and community hubs where memories are made. But right now, rising costs and unsustainable pressures are making it harder than ever for many pubs, restaurants, cafés, brewers and hotels to stay open.

That’s why we’re standing with chef and publican Tom Kerridge and the wider industry in supporting the campaign, calling for a fairer 10% VAT rate for hospitality.

Across Devon and the UK, independent venues are facing impossible numbers. It’s not a lack of community support that’s closing pubs – it’s the economics behind the bar. A reduced VAT rate would give vital breathing space, helping protect jobs, support local suppliers, and keep cherished venues like ours serving the community for years to come.

We believe hospitality deserves fair support, just as it does in many other European countries.

It’s been another beautiful day here, following a fabulous bank holiday weekend. ☀️ It’s so lovely to see the village bustling with people enjoying everything it has to offer. While we’re perfectly situated on the beautiful village green, we’re also just minutes from the beach. 🌊

Fresh lobster will be back on the menu this weekend from Friday! 🦞

Our chef is currently working on this weekend’s serving suggestion. Last weekend, the lobster was served as a classic Lobster Mornay; tender lobster meat in the shell, topped with a rich cheesy Béchamel sauce, grilled until golden and served with crispy fries and a fresh side salad.

They proved incredibly popular and sold out by Saturday!

We’re looking forward to the Shaldon Water Carnival's Spring Fete on the Green, in front of the pub, this bank holiday Monday.

The fete runs from 10:30am to 2:00pm, and to coincide with this we’ll be adjusting our opening hours and will be open from 10:00am that day.🎪

The fete will feature craft stalls, a brass band, a magician, and a tombola, as well as the crowning of this year’s Royal Party. Plus, the weather looks great! ☀️

As well as all our usual family entertainment and games to play, we have 2 new attractions for children this year: our Kids Kart Driving Game on the road next to the Green and the lovely kmfacepainter.

We’re delighted to welcome the Newton Bushel morris dancers for what promises to be a lively and entertaining performance.

Last weekend we had lobster on the menu, direct from our local supplier.

These were cooked and served as a classic lobster mornay dish; tender lobster meat nestled in the shell, covered in a rich, cheesy Béchamel sauce, then grilled until golden and served with crispy fries and a fresh side salad. They didn’t last long!

We’ll be having more fresh lobster this weekend, so if you’d like to book a table and pre-order a half lobster mornay, please get in touch.
