Situated in the upper Swansea Valley overlooking Pontardawe, Pontardawe Golf Club offers a unique location for playing golf. At just over 6101 yards and par 70, the course provides a good challenge for all standards of golfers. The course is situated on a mountain and is semi-parkland. The course has a few gentle inclines, but these are worthwhile as the golfer is treated to panoramic views. To th

e North, are the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain, to the South, the Swansea Valley, Mumbles Head and Swansea Bay. From the tee of the 16th, known locally as the pulpit, these magnificent views are captured. Pontardawe Golf Club prides itself as being a very friendly and sociable club to the visitor.

The boys were out in full waterproofs today, taking on the wind, rain and everything else the Welsh weather could throw at them to get the course in top shape for the weekend. Hopefully they’ve done enough to convince the golfing gods to send us some sunshine 🤞

As mentioned in the recent club newsletter, work on the new path on the 16th will begin at the end of July. To make sure everything runs as smoothly as a well-read putt, the boys have already started preparing the area by cutting back the verges and bushes that line the path. This work will continue over the coming weeks as they get everything ready for the contractors.

Think of it as our very own version of a catwalk, although the only models you’ll find are a few lost golf balls and the occasional wayward golfer looking for their tee shot, or the bar 🍻

The torrential rain stopped play today, but it didn’t stop our greenkeeping Team 💪

While the course gets a good old soaking, the lads are in the shed giving the machinery some TLC – greasing, oil changes, air filters, and a full check-over to keep everything running smoothly.

We know Jamie, Iwan, Joe and Rhodri love their machinery, and judging by the amount of grease involved, this might be their version of a spa day 😂
(Now there’s a picture we’d love to see 👀)

All part of keeping the course in top condition for when the South Wales sunshine finally decides to make an appearance. 🙏

Jamie’s reintroducing the semi rough to create a stronger contrast between fairway and rough, giving the course a more polished and professional appearance.

In his own words,

‘Fresh stripes. Cleaner definition. Better presentation.’

We aren’t sure what he’s describing there, but we’ll leave that to your own imagination 💭

Anyway, a small detail that makes a big difference, unless your ball’s in it, then it suddenly feels very significant. 😜

Surprise 60th Birthday Party for the One and Only Neil Sullivan 🎉

A surprise organised by his wife Kay, his children, close friends and family while Neil was expertly distracted with his trusty ‘Web’ boys on a day of golf.

Back at the club, everyone was hard at work preparing a celebration attended by Neil’s family, friends and members of the club. Safe to say, he absolutely loved it.

Anyone who knows Neil knows how much Pontardawe Golf Club means to him. Over the years he’s helped in countless ways and is always the first to lend a hand. He is truly invaluable to the club and one of the most genuine and kind-hearted people you’ll ever meet.

A huge thank you to the bar and catering teams, DJ Pete and to everyone who attended and helped make the day so special.

Neil’s birthday isn’t for a few weeks however both him and Kay are going on a well earned cruise to celebrate his birthday and this particular date fitted in perfectly 🙌

PS - Please excuse the music over the video. As you can imagine, there were a few choice words when Neil realised what was going on 🤣. We’ve done our best to cover them up while keeping the surprise and laughter of the moment.

And let’s be honest, the biggest surprise wasn’t the party, it was getting Neil away from the golf club long enough for us to organise it 😂

A few months ago, following our demo day, we decided to experiment with some new drainage techniques and machinery on the 6th hole.

The first clip was taken at 08:11am on Monday morning, showing the area after significant rainfall. The second clip was filmed at 09:08am, just one hour after the rain had stopped, and the improvement is clear to see. The final part of the video shows water actively draining away through the slits created by the machinery, demonstrating just how effective the process has been.

We’re really pleased with the early results and look forward to seeing the long-term benefits for the playing surface.

Now, onto the important bit, Jamie’s social media career. 👀

While the drainage work is progressing nicely, Jamie is still developing his skills behind the camera. Current areas for improvement include camera placement, breathing control, and remembering that viewers don’t necessarily need to hear every step he takes. As many of you will appreciate, it’s not quite as easy as our social media master BDJ makes it look 🎥

Following a detailed post-match analysis of his performance, Jamie has entered an intensive training programme focusing on narration, camera angles, and the revolutionary concept of holding the phone still. He has assured us that improvements are coming in due course.

Until then, please enjoy the drainage demonstration and try not to judge the cameraman too harshly 😜

The Welsh weather has certainly been testing us lately🌧️

With the course still very wet, getting the machines onto the course has been limited and a ‘no go’ as Jamie says. Instead, the boys have been busy strimming around the tees, bunkers and paths and clearing ditches to keep everything flowing as it should.

Thankfully, they caught a break in the rain today and managed to get the greens cut and ready for tonight’s team matches.

Unfortunately, it may take a lot more than manicured greens to improve some players putting skills 👀
