It was renamed the Albert Hall in 1881, which was a direct decision to arrest the slide due to the increasing popularity of more common halls of its type elsewhere.

The name came just over a decade of the naming of the Royal Albert Hall in London, lending itself to an identity of high class entertainment.

Inside, its interior was simply stunning.

Victorian architecture was a defining characteristic of the grand hall, which had a capacity of more than 2,500, and intricate ceiling grids also oozed class.

Its no wonder the hall once hosted performances and speeches from the likes of Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Adelina Patti and David Lloyd George.

In fact, it was held in such high regard that it was the venue of the Swansea district memorial in 1901 of the death of Queen Victoria.

A memorial concert was also held there in 1912 after the Titanic disaster.

Just off the Kingsway in Swansea city centre, this is a very imposing building on Cradock Street. Facade is pretty much as it has always been. From what I remember going there as a child the interior was much like an old music hall with a very deep steep circle with two ‘arms’ reaching towards the screen / stage.

If my memory serves me correctly it showed its final movie in about the early-1980’s. I remember queuing to see the Welsh premier of “Jaws” for four hours here.

The Mecca Bingo Club operation at the Albert Hall Cinema closed in March 2007.

“It has a wonderful heritage and now has an exciting future.”

It opened in 1864 as a public assembly and concert venue known as The Music Hall, Swansea, with a 2,500 capacity.

It became the Albert Hall in 1882, and over the years it has hosted performances and speeches from Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, David Lloyd George and opera singer Adelina Patti.

The venue - on the corner of De-La Beche Street and Cradock Street - became a silent movie cinema in 1922, switching to talkies in 1929.
