Did you know The Wheatsheaf in Sutton has wonky floors for a reason? 🍺

Most people think the sloping floors inside The Wheatsheaf were built that way on purpose… but that’s not true.

The Wheatsheaf on Mill Lane was built between 1936 and 1938 and is one of the best-preserved historic pubs in the country. In fact, it’s a Grade II listed building because so much of its original interior remains untouched.

But the famous “wonky floors” came later.

During the 1960s, coal mining beneath the Sutton area caused ground subsidence. As the land slowly shifted and settled, the building moved with it, creating the distinctive sloping floors that visitors still notice today.

Some locals say if you place a ball or even a glass on certain parts of the floor, it will slowly roll away on its own!

What started as a consequence of St Helens’ mining history has become one of The Wheatsheaf’s most talked-about features and a lasting reminder of the town’s industrial past.

Next time you’re in The Wheatsheaf, take a look around and see if you can spot just how much the floor slopes!
